Young Caucasian Dan Dunne teaches history and coaches the girls basketball team at a Brooklyn high school populated primarily by black and Hispanic students. To the chagrin of his superiors, Dan bucks the outlined curriculum of historical facts in favor of the philosophy of historical events, generally discussing the concept of dialectics. As such, he captures the imagination of his students, at least in the classroom. Outside of the classroom, Dan's life is in shambles. He has a distant but cordial relationship with his family. He uses illicit drugs rampantly. Although his former girlfriend Rachel was able to clean up her drug habit, Dan believes that rehab will not work for him. Due to a combination of these issues, he treats women poorly. Thirteen year old Drey is a student in his class and a player on his basketball team. Drey has her own problems. Her parents are divorced, with her father a virtually non-existent figure in her life and her EMT mother generally absent as she is ...

This is such a real movie that the only way to describe it is that it simply had to be made. Like Taxi Driver, Black Swan, etc., it touches upon mental health in a heartful yet thrilling way. It wants you to like the main character, and you do, though you notice their flaws, like Nina Sayers and Travis Bickle. All three are heroes, whether to others or themselves. Back when I was in high school, I started selling weed inside of a building 3 blocks away from my school. The lookout will be in the lobby and I would usually post up on the 3rd floor and the lookout will call me down whenever there was a customer. So one day around 12:30pm the lookout calls me down to serve a customer a 20 sack. Turns out that customer was my English teacher. If I knew it was him I would have never made that sale. It was an extremely awkward and uncomfortable sale to say the least. After my teacher left I asked the lookout if he ever seen my teacher before. He told me that he comes every other day around the same time to buy a 20 sack. So pretty much my English teacher was getting baked during lunch hour. After that day, he never came back to the building again and when he saw me in school he tried to offer me $100 to not speak a word of what happened. Half Nelson is an amazing film. Yes he is a Junky but he manages to Convince Dre to not be involved in that lifestyle. The meaning of Half Nelson is to be stuck in an uncomfortable position. Making his problem come full circle. We are left with him back at square one.
