Alexandria, 391 AD: Hypatia teaches astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. Her student Orestes is in love with her, as is Davus, her personal slave. As the city's Christians, led by Ammonius and Cyril, gain political power, the institutions of learning may crumble along with the governance of slavery. Jump ahead 20 years: Orestes, the city's prefect, has an uneasy peace with the Christians, led by Cyril. A group from the newly empowered Christians has now taken to enforce their cultural hegemony zealously; first they see the Jews as their obstacle, then nonbelievers. Hypatia has no interest in faith; she's concerned about the movement of celestial bodies and "the brotherhood of all". Although her former slave doesn't see it that way.

Conform religion is nothing more than people trying to control the masses. If what they are teaching is true then they had twisted the message so much that it doesn't resemble what it started out as. Peace, Love, understanding, forgiveness, etc. etc... These are what they claim to preach in most religions but yet the action that comes out of it are nothing but violence, anger, and bondage. They use religion to suppress and control our natural instincts. Look at how they try and shame us when it comes to our sexual nature. Yet when they suppressed our sexual nature it twists and corruptes the very act of it. How many bishops end up preying on the weak and vulnerable just so they can hide and pretend that they up– hold to their ridiculous views. They are supposed to be protecting the weak and vulnerable not molesting and ruining their lives! Our children are the most precious yet they prey on them because they themselves are the weak ones. And the Middle East claim that in the West we are the corrupt one because we allow homosexuality but because they hide away their women and have them cover up from head to toe the men end up trolling around the getto areas, which there are many, looking for poor and starving young boys, propositioning their family and them promising to pay for their future wedding and also giving the family money is the young boy would just stop as a woman and dance for older men and also having sex afterward! I hiding away their women they literally force men to have sex with other men. We are sexual beings. I don't care about man on man action but they are preying on vulnerable children that can't defend themselves. How hypocritical can they be that they don't see that if they hide away their women then the men would just have sex with other men. Who do they think that men are having sex with? I mean they made a video documentary about the whole damn thing!! And men having sex with men is so common that the men that dress up as women who end up living as transvestite are shunned by society and unable to get jobs so they beg on the street and prostitute to get money. People just ignore them like they don't exist. There are also superstition about them being unlucky or cursed which kind of works in their favor somewhat because people try to stay away from them instead of hurting them because they think they are cursed. At least they are not getting killed in mass quantities for being a transvestite and gay. All this unnatural and twisted reaction to what man has done to their own kind. And this is only two examples of how religion has ruined people's lives. I am not religious but spiritual. I just try to live my life how I would want to be treated, that is how I feel people should live, not bowing and worshiping fake idols that have done nothing for them. - @Wednesday, November 28, 2018 8:40 PM

This movie condemned Christianity but will not condemn the grossest things which heathens did to holy land of Alexandria. Glory to be God for our blessed fathers did whatever to cleanse the land from Paganism - @Thursday, May 3, 2018 10:48 AM

I am surprised to see how the comments have made this into something political. I thought we've reached a point in history where we can acknowledge that certain groups of people have done terrible things, that doesn't mean that people of these groups nowadays are evil. This movie does not say christians are evil any more than a Holocaust movie would say Germans are evil, or a movie on slavery in America would say white people are evil.i didn't get an anti-christian message from this movie at all. All I got was an admiration for Hypatia, a respect for the sciences, and understanding of the prevalent culture, and the cruelty of some people. - @Sunday, April 29, 2018 3:22 PM

Hypatia of Alexandria female philosopher and mathematician In 415 CE, on her way home from delivering her daily lectures at the university, Hypatia was attacked by a mob of Christian monks, dragged from her chariot down the street into a church, and was there stripped naked, beaten to death, her flesh cut from her bones and burned. In the aftermath of Hypatia's death the University of Alexandria was sacked and burned on orders from Christian Cyril, Pagan temples were torn down, and there was a mass exodus of intellectuals and artists from the newly-Christianise city of Alexandria. Cyril was later declared a BLOODY saint by the church for his efforts in suppressing THE OLD RELIGION Paganism and fighting for the mad xion faith. Hypatia's death has long been recognised as a watershed mark in history delineating the classical age of OLD RELIGION from the killing age of Christianity. - @Monday, July 10, 2017 12:01 PM

what sickens me is that the maker of this movie had to make a point that they're not opposed to religion, only fanaticism. I get it that they were scared, but if nobody has the balls to make a stand and come forward, if they didn't have the balls to say yes this movie was meant to show the evils of christianity, how it contributed to the destruction of the civilised world and the spreading of war, hatred fear and superstition, we will never be able to dismantle it. for goodness' sake. we live in the 21st century and despite the works of people like Darwin, Freud, Bertrand Russel and Richard Dawkins, christianity is still going strong. where the fuck is this world coming to? - @Sunday, February 7, 2016 6:04 PM

this movie takes place in 391 and just 90 years earlier under Emperor Diocletion the Christian Religion was stronngly forbidden by him in a decret. faith or no faith surely you are all smart enough to realise all modern religion is bullshit. there may very well be a higher power / powers but one thing is for certain we would never be able to comprehend what or who it is. there have been thousands of different religions throughout history and to think that any one of them is the one true religion is just idiotic. - @Tuesday, August 11, 2015 5:14 AM

This movie touched me deeply in many ways. It was so fantastic and beautiful, and yet so very aggravating at the same time. The ending was really hard for me to bare, but absolutely worth it. She was absolutely brilliant and fascinatingly wonderful as a character! Kudos to Rachel Weisz for her stunning execution of delivering a powerful performance.... - @Saturday, August 8, 2015 8:56 AM

While everyone else here is doing a religion vs non-religion fight, the only thing that disturbs me is how people could even bring themselves to destroy such beautiful buildings and statues! I mean come on,I am not a Christian but I find some churches and other things of Christianity looking absolutely gorgeous! No matter what your religion is, anyone who destroys beautiful things because it's from a diffrent religion or goes against your own religion is nothing more than a barbarian! - @Wednesday, July 29, 2015 9:57 PM

Why do people constantly put HD in the video title, but the video might go up to only 360p, 480p if you are lucky? Last time I checked, HD was MINIMUM 720p, and 720p is really an outdated resolution. 1080i and 1080p are standard, and soon 2160p (Ultra HD or 4K) will be out. Will people start uploading 720p videos and labeling them 4K? - @Saturday, June 13, 2015 12:39 AM

Lets check the facts of this movie. Did Christians destroyed the Library of Alexandria? Nop. They destroyed a temple to Sarapis because the Pagans persecuted Christians for 300 of years. Knowledge was preserved because of Christians (that's how we read today ancient knowledge) Did Christians killed Hypatia? No. The mob killed her because she had influence to the Governor Orestis, she was killed for political reasons not religious. Was Hypatia the Ancinet Female Einstein? No. She was a copycat, she just published and teached again ancient knowledge that was already copied by Christians Monks in the Byzantine Library. This movie is pure antichristian propaganda made by an atheist, would you trust a movie about Christianity that was made by the Church? Why do you trust a movie made by the Atheist Church? - @Saturday, May 23, 2015 2:51 AM

You must remember that each person did not have a personal Bible like today (especially since most of the lower classes could not read). The lower classes were taught by elite church members so they believed whatever the bishop or whoever interpreted from the word. This gave the clergy power and gave them the idea that they can justify the persecution of sinners. - @Friday, February 6, 2015 5:45 PM

Fabian Hale
I am a christian and I do not support what the Christians in this film did. Although they were persecuted for a long time, that does not justify persecuting sinners. In my opinion, persecution is never justified. People think one sin is worse than another, when in reality all sin is the same. - @Friday, February 6, 2015 5:40 PM

Religion - Christian or otherwise - has never contributed positively to human life. Religion has been the enemy of reason and logic since its birth.  Science fiction writers often hypothesize travelling back in time to assassinate Hitler. I say it is better to assassinate Jesus or whoever made up the Abrahamic faiths. Humanity would have been thousands of years ahead of its time by now. - @Wednesday, January 7, 2015 4:51 AM

I am no fan of the so called "Christian" churches and their political influence. But in the 4th century only 1/10th of the empire was Christian even after Constantine granted it the national state religion status... This "mob" that overcomes the entire city of Alexandria, doesn't seem possible by the time Hypatia appears.  - @Wednesday, August 13, 2014 6:57 AM
