In 1874, in the Imperial Russia, the aristocratic Anna Karenina travels from Saint Petersburg to Moscow to save the marriage of her brother Prince Oblonsky, who had had a love affair with his housemaid. Anna Karenina has a cold marriage with her husband, Count Alexei Karenin, and they have a son. Anna meets the cavalry officer Count Vronsky at the train station and they feel attracted by each other. Soon she learns that Vronsky will propose to Kitty, who is the younger sister of her sister-in-law Dolly. Anna satisfactorily resolves the infidelity case of her brother and Kitty invites her to stay for the ball. However, Anna Karenina and Vronsky dance in the ball, calling the attention of the conservative society. Soon they have a love affair that will lead Anna Karenina to a tragic fate.

Could anoyone explain me why they keep casting blonde actors in all Anna Karenina adaptations for Vrobsky's role? He was brunette: it says that in the book. Not repeatedly times, I agree though. And just bc the book is entitled "Anna Karenina", that doesen't mean that there is all about her. Anna Karenina is not a story about love, on the one hand it shows a path of moral failure (Anna) but on the other it helps the reader to see the way of leading a good life according to Christian morals (Levin). Keira knighley is a nice talented woman and good acting. But not sized for the character my opinion ..Anna is not only beautiful , she has mesmerizing charms, and Tolstoï described her with chubby hands and plump chest. Also id like to say that they miss something about the meaning of the novel..its not only about a passionated love.... By the way am I the only one who feel like vronski was the bad guy in the movie ? And hell , in the novel he is absolutely not becoz nobody's guilty , good or bad one. There only actions who dertermines the end of the novel. The movie doesn't do justice to Tolstoy's great work. Leo Tolstoy didn't want Anna's character to look like that. More than a dozen main characters in the novel each portraying different principles in amazingly plotted circumstances of their own. Political religious social domestic agricultural philosophical scientific ideas discussed in an ingenious way in the novel. Behaviour and psychology body language which is Russian in soul in the novel to which the russian masses connect and all so wanting in the movie. Only names are same Russian in the movie; Russians talking in British accent. Ohh how can it all be mixed or rather messed up in a movie. Very brave to have even thought about making movie on a novel consisting 8 volumes. And kitty was described as much innocently prettier in the novel than the kitty in movie. And it is not a romance novel not at all a mere love story between Anna and Vronsky but between kitty and levin. I actually really loved this. A lot of parts were cut but anna karenina is a huge book and i sort of expected that. What i looked for was the emotion from the book and i think it was properly conveyed. The chemistry between anna and vronsky was pretty strong, too. But the best part is definitely the soundtrack! For those who wonder why it got so many bad reviews: it's because people still don't understand that an adaptation doesn't have to be exactly like the book.
