When I was a kid early 1960's; our family went to the beach in Englewood, Florida I always looked for that surfin teen age crowd and older kids singing and dancing.  Boy; I sure wanted to see some of those bikinis and hot babes runnin around.  What a let down; We just had old, over weight, frumpy retired people looking for sea shells at our beach.  So; when I became a teen and had a car late 1960's; well; I HAD TO have my own beach party; at last.  Portable 8 TRACKS were in  I had a friend with one of the new BEACH BOY'S TAPES. We somehow found several water melons just happened to be laying in a field and had a cooler  packed with 7Up, Pepsi and RCs a few bags of LAYS, hot dogs and a fresh loaf of wonder bread, all good to go  BUT... The movies never mentioned sand flees and mosquitoes that come out in the evening and night.  We made a fire alright but the fire drew in more mosquitoes and the sand flees were non stop biting everyone.  Oh; I was assuring everyone that the mosquitoes and sand flees only eat for a half hour or so.  BUT NO; These damn bugs weren't on my schedule.   The wave noise drowned out the music and the babes refused to run around doing the twist no one was wearing a bikini and no one dared getting down on the beach blankets because of the fiddler crabs that dominate the beach at night.  As the minutes ticked; more sand flees populated our hair and bodies than the sand and besides; no one even looked anything like ANNETTE.   HOW DID THEY DO THAT? - @Saturday, May 17, 2014 3:53 AM

On this day in 1965 the Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello movie "Beach Blanket Bingo" opened in theaters across the U.S.A. The movie's director, William Asher, won an Emmy Award for the TV comedy series 'Bewitched'... Elvis' movie "Girl Happy" also opened in theaters nationwide on the same day... R.I.P. Ms. Funicello {1942 - 2013} and to The King {1935 -1977}... - @Monday, April 15, 2013 1:52 AM

@fangsupkatie - In the 1960's, bras were made to look like the tops of rockets or the shape of torpedoes, therefore cone shape. It went along with large tail fins on cars, and things we now label as "retro". Annette also had it going on big time which also helped. - @Sunday, February 12, 2012 2:33 PM

@colindominy I will say that Marta Kristen is a treasure. She is a delight in person. Marta admitted that many members of the cast had colds during filming. She didn't become sick. The water must have helped her immune system. - @Saturday, September 17, 2011 10:44 AM

@catbird007 That's a lovely way to think of heaven. What a big difference it backcame after the 60's. And now. All this political correct crap and everybody's got to be careful of what they say because if they hurt someone's feelings that person makes a big stink about it, I'm so glad I was there back then. I was born in 1955 and born in Ft.Lauderdale and grew up in Miami. It was a fun time. - @Thursday, October 21, 2010 1:11 PM

One of the best: and with Dynasty's Linda Evans singin' and Lost In Space's Marta Kristen as a swimmin' mermaid -- how could you go wrong?! Great movie theme, too. In retrospect, there are some of the last great "teen movies" of the old-school film years. - @Friday, February 29, 2008 3:57 AM
