Action Crime Documentary Drama Mystery War

7.5 / 10

Dirty Wars follows investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill, author of the international bestseller Blackwater, into the hidden world of America's covert wars, from Afghanistan to Yemen, Somalia, and beyond. Part action film and part detective story, Dirty Wars is a gripping journey into one of the most important and underreported stories of our time. What begins as a report on a deadly U.S. night raid in a remote corner of Afghanistan quickly turns into a global investigation of the secretive and powerful Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). As Scahill digs deeper into the activities of JSOC, he is pulled into a world of covert operations unknown to the public and carried out across the globe by men who do not exist on paper and will never appear before Congress. In military jargon, JSOC teams "find, fix, and finish" their targets, who are selected through a secret process. No target is off limits for the "kill list," including U.S. citizens.

Crappy, modernistic, overly dumb sound effects soundtrack detracts from this preview's credibility. I have seen the entire documentary on Netflix, though, and it is very good. . . - @Sunday, July 17, 2016 10:17 PM

You people are just so blind to the real world. The truth is very simple, war has casualties and those casualties include innocent men, women and children. What you think that this global war of terrorism is going to be any different than any other war ever fought in the history of man? you think somehow with all our technology we can avoid innocent civilians getting caught in the crossfire? You people need to wake the fk up! This is not the first nor the last time Americans have killed innocent people, sht happens on the battlefield and when it does you feel bad sure, what person wouldn't? But what happens happens and you push on! This is what i hate most about many Americans, somehow we have this naive idea in our head that we only kill bad guys and that somehow the American soldier has such precise aim that when an innocent dies it has to be because we wanted them dead! Most of you have never set one foot on a battlefield. Its chaos, its full of excitement and fear and unfortunately panic. You think those bullets are going to reach their intended targets 100% of the time in those conditions? you think the carpet bombing from American b52s in WW2 all hit their intended targets in France and Germany? America is just as guilty for killing French civilians as Germany was during WW2. How is today's day and age any different from those of Eisenhower? Until we, Americans, decide to place ourselves, our friends and our families in cross hairs of Jihad then what SOCOM and JSOC is doing in the middle east must be allowed to continue. You people have no place in the covert operations scene, your naive idea on unconventional warfare is nowhere near what it takes to fight these cowards of Allah. People so twisted that they hide behind their friends, their family, their community and have no problem letting them die in their place. What annoys me the most about this whole documentary is that it doesnt at all mention the horrible actions committed by al-Qaeda. you think 150 dead via a hellfire missile is bad? how about 120 afghans getting their hands chopped off because they accepted us aid? What about the taliban coming into a town in the middle of the night and beheading people who accepted medicine or got patched up by our medics? What about the hundred other fking things they do just because it has something to do with America or the west? Why don't you people just go back to your "reality" TV, your sitcoms and Starbucks. Leave the ugly nasty part of war for people with the balls to face the unknown and make the hard choices that would make you quiver in fear. - @Sunday, October 19, 2014 2:06 PM

And then what?! If we will go by the Atheist logic.. Those American savages won't get punished cuz there is no one who is stronger than them now.. I'm retracting my statement about the Taliban or Al Qaeda being a part of Bacha Bazi. However, we will never know if Al Qaeda ever got involved in this strange Afghan practice, i wouldn't be surprised. This is when cultures and laws clash big time ! Should the US condone pedophilia or child sex slavery ? This documentary is extremely biased. - @Wednesday, August 27, 2014 12:29 AM

Just watched this documentary. Incredibly powerful, all the time backed up by proof and evidence. Just when you suspected that America are the world's terrorists, this documentary single-handedly proves it. And while that monster Obama is busy smiling for 'selfies' with his media buddies, he's busy dropping bombs all over the fucking world, on top of innocent men, women and children. I think to watch this documentary solidifies why America's 'War on Terror' can NEVER be won...every single action they perform creates a massive multiplication of their enemies.... Unless that's something they actually want? - @Friday, May 23, 2014 9:47 PM

This is one of the most important documentaries to watch to understand the negative aspects of America's war on terror. We are brutalizing disenfranchised peoples, while at the same time exacerbating terrorism. In Somalia, Al-Shabab benefitted from the American war on terror. Because of our abuses that group went from a rag tag small force, to one of the largest terror threats we are facing. The American war on terror has failed morally and strategically, it is time to pull our troops out. - @Saturday, May 17, 2014 1:01 PM

Another thing is these black ops unit conduct loads of raids all the time, there no question about it. In most cases I suspect that the targets are genuine and are threats to national security or our related to Al-Qaeda. But there are probably mistakes that the US doesn't want to admit to. But I suspect the majority of raids carried out our genuine, there are probably less mistakes than actual legit raids. Another thing to point out is that that if Al-Qaeda and other groups could they would start another Holocaust there no doubt about it, the chances of that happening are very slim but potentially you could have multiple Holocaust if Al-Qaeda and other groups got there way and the only reason they haven't been able to do that yet is because there not in power yet, they do not have the finances and resources to be able to do it and we are out there and stopping it from getting to that stage. Now you could argue we have made peoples lives worse and made the world a more dangerous place but we have also made the world a safer place. I think we should have fought terror from the start with airstrikes, raids and intelligence from the start. If we had done that fewer people would have died, we would have saved money etc. However Sadam Hussein would still be in power, the Taliban would still be in power etc. so its quite hard to determine what the right thing to do is. I think we should continue the fight against terror but stick to Raids and Drone Strikes and focus on improving security at home as supposed to sending in conventional forces into country's with a "crusade" like mentality. I think many Obama has realized this, that Bushes approach was not the best but the threat of terrorism still remains. That why we are pulling out of Afghanistan because we done the best we can, we need our troops back at home, we need to stop wasting lives and money and but carry on fighting terrorism but in a different way to how we have done in the past. 2001-2010 Strategy (Preferred by President Bush) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Invade Country's, Troops on the ground, massive invasions, occupy the country etc. 2011+ Strategy (Preferred by President Obama) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Train up the countries armies so we can leave, get the hell out of there but offer some support so the whole conflict was not pointless and so the good guys can stay in power. Carry on fighting terrorism, through raids, intelligence and drone strikes. This is a more cost-effective strategy, less lives being lost on our side. Fighting un-conventionally which is the best way to fight Terrorism. - @Saturday, March 29, 2014 6:12 PM

To be honest I have looked at both sides of the argument, I am quite open minded and I accept the fact that the president of the USA and most other country's have some form of secret army. Throughout history every government or state has had one. Why are we worried about the "state watching us" have you got something to hide. Another thing I looked through the comments and everyone is saying things like if there was a hit list then wouldn't all the people in this film be on it and stuff like that, what you have to remember is if they were to kill everyone in this film and not allow it to be published then it would look bad on them and would prove there was something to hide, so instead they just allow people to say what they want to so they don't look guilty. Going back to what I was saying I think its good we have an intelligence agency that is watching our every movement, I know that sounds bad but I doubt that the intelligence services watch you all the time and all that, why the hell would they be interested in watching you, remember it all costs money and they will only spend money watching people they are concerned the most about. It just paranoia that the government is watching you 24/7, they probably have the means to do it but its not practical for them to do it and they would not gain everything from it. - @Saturday, March 29, 2014 5:55 PM

“Dirty Wars”: if you haven’t seen the covert actions and “invisible” stealth wars first-hand, then you need to see this Academy Award-nominated documentary on the global secret war-making that is being conducted NOW in our name. If the world is a more dangerous place now for you to live and travel in, then this is will reveal the reasons why that is so, and why it will continue to be so. - @Wednesday, March 19, 2014 9:42 PM

I think what we are seeing is a very powerful elite using its controlled army (the US) clearing these arab/muslim countries to make more room for a bigger expanded state of Israel and big corp.. This was how Cesar of the Roman Empire would do it and did, until it all collapsed.. And mark my words, the US Empire will collapse but the elite behind it all will just move to the next pawn in the game and use that to build another Empire. History repeats itself until we the people change this.. Never enroll in the Army, never be the coward to hold your tongue on truth.. And never be that idiot who takes pride for its government war actions even how much they try to indoctrinate you and glorify it saying they are the good guys and the ones they are killing are the enemy.. The only true enemy to the elite and war machine is you! "One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter" - @Wednesday, March 5, 2014 7:33 PM

If you want to skip the documentary I'll sum it up:  USA is killing innocent people all over the globe (including US citizens) which is causing the war on terror to create more terrorist, hence producing a never ending war.   my 2 cents: If you think that "we have to do something" you're just buying into the propaganda of the industrial war machine which is driven by more than just one special interest group.  I'd suggest apologizing to US's victims and maybe STOP THE WAR CRIMES! - @Sunday, February 23, 2014 10:17 AM

Kinda slow at the beginning but worth it.   A great eye opener that I suggest everyone watches right after: The War You Don't See - John Pilger investigates the media's role in war. He traces the history of 'embedded' and independent reporting from the carnage of WWI to the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Facts seem to check out, I knew about some before this. - @Sunday, February 23, 2014 10:05 AM

This was supposed to be an expose on JSOC until the gov't outed themselves after they killed Osama in the middle of the making of the doc. Then he changes the story line, and while it's sad to see innocents die, in every war there is collateral damage. Filmmaker tries to garner sympathy, what I don't understand is, the movie focuses on the assassination of Al-Awlaki, who was arguably the most evil terrorist, in the history of mankind. They also fail to mention that when he teenage son was killed two weeks later, he was with high ranking Al-Qaeda officials, and when he himself was killed, was with the editor of Al-Qaeda's propaganda magazine.  He argues that Awlaki was an American citizen, so it was unconstitutional without a fair trial, yet omits the fact that Awlaki fled the country while wanted, had a long criminal record including everything from prostitution to massive fraud. He lied about his birthplace to get foreign scholarships and had phony passports. His number was found in 3 of the 9/11 hijackers phonebooks, he also counseled the Fort Hood shooter in the 6 weeks prior to the deadly attack.  I knew about this guy for many years, watching this documentary wouldn't have been so sickening if it weren't quite funny in its desperation. The filmmaker is the real star, constantly looking like a secret agent, always trying to look and act cool. The fact this was nominated for any award let alone an Oscar is insanity.  - @Thursday, February 6, 2014 3:33 AM

I don't need to watch this documentary but I do like the reporter Scahill, on news panels when discussing the use of drones or warfare. It's like he's only person there who even acknowledges, and cares about the civilians that get hurt and die from a drone attack. He's only pointing out the obvious, that hitting the wrong target is not only " unfortunate", it causes a whole wave of hatred and resentment that the Anerican public can't understand, cos they're told about the human casualties. They have every right to be as hurt ss those people affected by 9/11, and visa versa. I'm do sick of both wars and drone attacks and terrorist bomb attacks, cos the only people getting hurt are the innocent people in western, middle eastern, Asian, African countries. - @Friday, January 10, 2014 11:01 AM

I don't understand.... is this new? Most of the major powers played this game for a very long time. It pisses me off when people do nothing and play naive games when the times are good, and bitch about it when they have to swallow the hard truth. Never trust someone until you really know the person. That applies to everyone, even the government. People tend to think they are entitled for a better world, and they are so wrong.
