The Doctor, an alien time traveller from the planet Gallifrey, is transporting the remains of his nemesis, the Master back to their homeworld. However the Master is not as dead as the Doctor thinks. The Master's essence escapes and sabotages the TARDIS, the Doctor's time machine causing it to crash land in San Franscisco on December 30th 1999. The Doctor requires a beryllium atomic clock to repair the TARDIS, but is shot as he leaves it. Taken to hospital, the Doctor's seventh regeneration is triggered by a surgeon, confused by his alien physiology, while the Master takes over a paramedic's body. He needs a Time Lord's body to survive and be able to regenerate again so he needs the Doctor's. The newly regenerated the Doctor must fight to save his own eighth body, and the world when the Master sabotages the TARDIS' power source. By midnight on December 31st 1999, the Earth will be pulled through this power-source, a mini-black hole, and only the Doctor can stop if only he can remember ...

For all its flaws - and there are a few - I still prefer this movie, with its darker tone and style, over New Who. This FELT like a continuation of Old Who, which is something I've never gotten with the new series. Maybe it's just me, but I wish this pilot had succeeded and we'd got more of the 8th Doctor in this Gothic format. (And by the way, the TARDIS looked utterly cool. I loved the new design!) - @Sunday, January 28, 2018 9:03 PM

I think the movie is my guilty pleasere. - It's horribly written, and Master's performence is really bad, but it's a lot of fun, and it looks pretty good on blu ray - @Friday, December 22, 2017 1:15 PM

Am I the only one who loves this movie, different yes but different doesn't mean bad, the use of Madam Butterfly and the sad reality of the 7th doctor dying on his own on an operating table was heartbreaking! And silly sexy Paul :P - @Wednesday, March 15, 2017 11:56 AM

Will think more about trying to own this version than the DVD because I missed my chance a couple years ago when I saw Doctor Who: The Movie by itself during the season of Christmas as per the winter holidays instead I now own my copies of the story Horror At Fang Rock and the special The Snowmen but I could still get the combo pack that featured him along with the previous three doctors - @Monday, October 17, 2016 8:46 AM

I think in some ways one thing that is very overlooked about this film is that in a sense it provided a little bit of a blueprint for the modern era of Doctor Who. It was shot on film with lots of location work, had a bigger budget with good SFX, and had a very cinematic feel (including the sense of scale in the Tardis). And of course we had a Doctor that got to kiss a girl and be seen as romantic. If anything this showed that Doctor Who could be made in a more modern way, a world way from the old series of the late 80's from before the hiatus, shot on video to a lower budget with creaky indoor sets, an episodic serial format that didn't always work so well in terms of pace, and some very stilted acting from the non-leads. In a sense, modern Doctor Who as we know it had it's genesis right here in The Movie. - @Saturday, September 24, 2016 4:22 PM

I remember when I saw this on TV. I remember thinking yes, the Doctor is back! Then having a very embarrassing adult feminine reaction to the sight of Paul McGann's handsome Doctor. Not good as I was sitting next to my then husband.😃 - @Thursday, September 22, 2016 11:30 PM

Literally, I watched this movie almost everyday on my TV: SyFy, but seeing it advertised on Blu-Ray is even better. I definitely want one. - @Thursday, September 22, 2016 12:07 AM

The movie wasn't nearly disastrous as it could be, but several things could have used a light slap behind the head of the writer and designer, such as the plotholes involving the daleks and the master (but I recognize the master's plan was really fiting like the classic Doctor Who plot) and the design of the tardis was TERRIBLE. Someone though it was what, a haunted mansion time machine? Dried leaves and bats inside a stone-cold atrium as the time vortex? And the doctor was a wee bit underplayed, but the actor was perfect. I look forward for a doctor who movie DONE PROPERLY in the future. Come on, we have the technology! - @Wednesday, September 21, 2016 2:49 PM

You should make an Doctor Who Spin Off called ¨Doctor Who: The Time War¨ where Paul McGain is playing the 8th Doctor and we get to see what he went trough and then later on John Hurt (or the actor who played the Young War Doctor) can play the War Doctor after the 8th Doctor dies in the crash and the continue the series until the War Doctor got to the point where was thinking of destroying Gallifrey as its in the 50th Anniversary Episode. - @Wednesday, September 21, 2016 1:47 PM

I wonder if anyone will actually buy this today? The sort of people who would spend £20 on a TV Movie Blu-Ray are also the sort of people who know it's not actually in Blu-Ray quality. - @Tuesday, September 20, 2016 2:30 PM

I remember mostly enjoying it on the night, and finding it pretty damn bad when I rewatched it a year ago. Such a shame. Eight deserved (and deserves) better. Seven too - my favourite of the classic Doctors. - @Tuesday, September 20, 2016 6:43 AM

I wonder if they will do some audiobooks or or or some recorded episode's that the writers planned to make after the film if it had in fact actually made more money and was more of a success. You know add them onto the Blu-Ray DVD in the Special Features. - @Monday, September 19, 2016 10:09 PM
