The first time I watched this I thought it was okay, but kind of long and lacking energy. The two lead characters passive and drab, the score forgettable, the sequences too long and the colour palette ugly. Rewatching it more times though I've grown to like this film a fair bit. Firstly the poetic understated performance of the character Yuri I really like now. He's a gentle soul in a violent world. A good man living through horrible times. The central tragedy of the film is that Yuri sympathized with the revolution and believed in equality for all, that's why when the revolution goes all wrong it breaks his heart - @Monday, November 12, 2018 7:46 PM

I love how the battle scenes all take place is bright beautiful locations, even the one where the Reds realize they've shot a load of child soldiers. In contrast all the love scenes take place in drab dull settings. It's great because it totally subverts the usual cinematic cliches that the weather needs to match the mood. - @Saturday, November 10, 2018 11:46 AM

No masterpiece, this for me. The strange mixture of accents caused by some rather wayward casting didn't help, but worse for me was the over romanticising of what was really a very tough story, which in turn lead to his worst film, Ryan's Daughter, the seeds of which can be seen here. I liked it rather more the second time I saw it, as I could concentrate more on the key poltical events rather than the rather soppy love story, but it's still not a good Lean. The novel deserved better. - @Friday, July 28, 2017 10:25 PM

This film is a self-portrait of Pasternak himeself.Little man born in the time of disturbant revolution, unable to stand clearly at any situation but still kept his independent until swallowed by historical torrent. - @Friday, November 4, 2016 8:13 AM

one of my all time favorite movies,my only disappointment with the film was not playing up the role of Tonya played by the lovely Geraldine Chaplin who becomes his wife, she was important to his childhood developement,it was she who encouraged him to become a doctor and she was completely devoted to him as he was to her,not that I'm setting aside Lara(Julie Christie's role) its just both women were important to him an Tonya's role should have been equally shown. - @Wednesday, October 26, 2016 2:39 AM

I saw this film for the first time at the Bradford film festival in 1999 on a large anamorphic screen and what an experience it was. If you have never seen this film before, your very lucky and it needs to be seen on the big screen. - @Tuesday, October 27, 2015 6:21 PM

Great contemporary treatment to help promote an old classic. Brilliant because the original music would only work in the movie - @Thursday, October 22, 2015 2:26 AM

If I only lived in the UK. One of the greatest films ever made. My favorite Lean. I watch this one again and again and, with every viewing, it blows me away just as much as it did the first time. - @Tuesday, October 20, 2015 9:29 PM

I am sorry to say I don't like the new trailer: the epic in crescendo music puts me off and frankly, I have the feeling I am going to see a new Star Trek film (believe me: listen to it without looking at the screen). - @Tuesday, October 20, 2015 12:38 PM
