In a review of the film, Jeffrey Evan Brooks, author of alternate history novels about the Civil War, criticized the portrayal of the VMI cadets as being opposed to slavery. This was historically inaccurate, as most white Virginia men in the 1860s supported slavery. In addition, the majority of these cadets would have been planters' sons, with even more reason to support slavery. Brooks said it was unsupported historical revisionism.[3] lol 1984 fucking history and getting away with it - @Monday, April 2, 2018 5:03 AM

I think the movie had potential...its 33 mins in and the Confederates are bickering and assholes to the kid. I hope they die a gruesome death. especially the guy who recorded all this shit. - @Wednesday, July 12, 2017 4:25 AM

As a civil war reenactor (Union) and history buff, I can tell you that this movie is only partly accurate to the portrayal of the actual battle itself. The movie portrayed the Cadets taking on a Pennsylvania Regiment, the 54th PVI. When in fact the 54th never engaged the Cadets head on. The Cadets were moved into the Confederate center, while the 54th was positioned on the left of Thoburn's Brigade, further west of the VMI position. The regiment that engaged and eventually retreated was the 1st West Virginia, Which was positioned more in the Union center. The Ohio units of Moor's Brigade along with the 54th and 34th Mass tried to hold the line as long as they could fighting a stubborn withdrawal the entire way back North. I know that Hollywood takes liberties in everything they do, I just want folks to know, that yes VMI did hold the Confederate center and take a battery of artillery it just wasn't against the 54th PVI as the movie showed.I do like the fact that not all Southern soldiers were not fighting for slavery as it seems everyone thinks that was the only reason the war was being fought. By 1864, yes it was a main focus of the politicians, President Lincoln the forerunner or this, but the war was fought for states rights, as well as other underlying reasons. Yes slavery was PART of the fight, but not the whole fight.I am not trying to spark a debate on slavery, I just want facts to come forward as well. - @Wednesday, April 19, 2017 8:08 PM

Abe Lincoln's #1 mission: force the independent Southern states back into the union, at any cost, via invasion and annihilation. Slavery was an issue, however, it was not Lincoln's #1 mission. - @Wednesday, March 8, 2017 8:51 PM

This battle really happened and this movie could have been a good chance to display the confederate side of the story. That being said I am actually angry at some of the blatant false portrayal of confederate and Union armies. It portrays the Confederates as people who own slaves but somehow these guys were nice to their slaves. My next gripe is how negatively they portray Ulysses S. Grant. Spiel is somewhat accurate but they overdid it with him too. I was so mad I was actually less concerned with the acting quality compared to the lies from this movie. - @Sunday, September 4, 2016 9:11 AM

I really struggle to understand how the fuck people can justify the South and what it tried to do... this movie is like watching some Waffen SS troopers being brave and shit but underneath they still were simple boys with a golden heart... Bullshit! Yeah, they were brave, but they were still freaking Nazies, they were still disgusting monsters and these assholes were disgusting monsters too. - @Thursday, February 4, 2016 7:33 PM

I loved this movie. I am a louisiana southerner and I would gladly pick up arms to protect my friends, family, and our way of life, the south.Just like these young kids did. They were truly fighting for a nicer southern way of life not slavery. I will not say I wish the south would have won because slavery is wrong, but man o' man I do think we would be living in a better place and be in a better position had we. (minus the slavery ) say all the bigotry and racist things you like, cuz honestly I don't give a damn. - @Friday, January 22, 2016 6:58 AM

For all the folks who think the Confederacy was made up of men that were nothing but racial bigots this is a must see. The Civil war was a very complex war . All though the main argument was over slavery there were many circumstances that dragged young men into the conflict and not all confederate soldiers who fought were racists , they were soldiers protecting their homeland against an invading army . Out numbered 2 to 1 the confederacy fought bravely as did the soldiers of the Union army , this movie is about the bravery and integrity of both the North and the South. - @Thursday, December 31, 2015 11:40 AM

I really wanted to love this movie, but I couldn't. I don't know if it was the horrible sound effect screams, or the acting, but it seemed like the only great actor in the entire film was Jason Isaacs. - @Tuesday, March 17, 2015 9:02 PM

Historically Inaccurate and at points outright lies, its a good war Drama but it is not a realistic version of the story. In Real Life Henry Wise, the father of the main character, was Pro-Slavery and a huge supporter of secession, and the battle was a small engagement against a what was really an under-strength Division of Union troops, not the full army the confederates expected. And the VMI students played a minor role, crossing a muddy field with the rest of the CSA foces to capture lines that the Union had already mostly abandoned, and it only resulted in unnecessary dead. Over all it was a Phyric CSA victory, they lost men and equipment they couldn't replace to protect farms whose crops only produced a few weeks worth of food for the Army. But Hollywood seems to have a thing for making inaccurate civil war movies seemingly produced by Lost Cause Historians, at least this one was entertaining as a fictionalized version of History. - @Tuesday, March 10, 2015 8:17 AM

Just saw this movie on Netfilx streaming. This movie was okay, wasn't the worst I've ever seen. Could of been done a lot better and had potential for a full budget film. One of the things that kind of pissed me off was the over emphasis on the one Jewish soldier cadet. As the character is brought up through out the movie they keep focusing on his Jewish background. In a way it's kind of racist to keep pointing out the character's Jewishness than to just treat him as one of the rest of the soldiers. It was unnecessary and in a way detracted from the character's story. It made it a little awkward. Other than that, I think this was done okay. Not  a Civil War buff, just someone who's into good storytelling. And there's a lot going on with this movie. - @Sunday, February 15, 2015 9:44 AM

Why the hell did they say the war was over slavery in this movie, that is the most absurd thing I've ever heard. If my grandfather that proudly died for the confederacy heard you say that he'd put a bullet in you. - @Wednesday, February 11, 2015 2:15 AM

What a joke! The producers of this flick turned a great real life story into a politically correct circus. Putting strong, and very false, emphasis on all Whites being cruel and callous to all blacks with the exception of the group of cadets who lament the evil of slavery. Listening to them one would think that they were Yankee abolitionists. Harriet Beecher Stowe would've been proud of them. Plus in the battle scenes there's not a single Confederate flag of any type visible. And to top it off, there's endlessly long dull syrupy 19th century teeny-bop puppy love scenes. The battle scenes weren't bad but having to suffer through all the other bullshit prior to them wasn't worth it. - @Wednesday, February 4, 2015 5:12 PM

Until we can actually be straightforward about the Civil War and accept that otherwise decent people fought for an atrocious cause we should probably stop making these stupid movies that try to wallow in the "glory" of it all.  It would actually be interesting and useful to see a movie in which these boys were portrayed as they really were.  Forcing the characters to wrestle with our modern perspective on it (we shouldn't be fighting to keep people in chains) is just a dumb anachronism and something one of these guys wouldn't have said in a million years.  The fact is that a majority of white Americans at the time, North and South, believed that slavery was the "natural condition" of black people.  Abolitionists were Radicals, often mocked in the North, and seen as criminally insane by the society of the South.  They weren't moving towards abolition in the South.  They were becoming more and more steadfast in their belief in the rightness of it all.  Calhoun was the sage of the day.  Yes, the Confederacy was formed and fought  to protect the institution of slavery and to maintain the condition of white supremacy.  But like with all societies and in all wars there were many Good Boys sent to the front line, relatively innocent about the forces behind the war in which they were asked to die.  Go ahead and  make a movie about these guys being a bunch of beautiful, dedicated boys.  You could do the same with Hitler Youth or young soldiers of many wars.  But don't mess with what was really going on because people  are confused about this enough already.  Still waiting for someone to make a good Civil War movie.    - @Tuesday, November 25, 2014 7:13 PM

The Battle of New Market was a battle fought on May 15, 1864, in Virginia during Valley Campaigns of 1864 in the American Civil War. A small Confederate army, which included cadets from the Virginia Military Institute (V.M.I.), forced Union Major General Franz Sigel and his army out of the Shenandoah Valley. - @Wednesday, September 3, 2014 4:43 PM
