The plot takes place at the beginning of the 20th century, in a reality where alchemy is real, extremely developed and respected. The plot features brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric who, after attempting the forbidden technique of human transmutation, suffer the consequences. Alphonse loses his entire body while Edward loses his left leg. Edward then sacrifices his right arm to save his brother's soul by attaching it to a metal suit of armor. Edward is then given mechanical prosthetics known as "automail" in place of his missing arm and leg. Upon acceptance into the State Alchemists, he is given the nickname "Fullmetal Alchemist", all while searching with Alphonse for the legendary philosopher's stone, that will repair their bodies.

jesus christ. You jap movie makers are ruining this for me. Elric brothers are germans why star a blond japanese guy is utterly ridiculous. What the hell are these guys are thinking? It's like Attack on Titan live action which took place in japan only. note that the attack on titan anime is located in europe. These movie maker bastards just bastardized everything. - @Wednesday, February 21, 2018 1:28 PM

My Personal Review of this movie (CONTAINS HEAVY SPOILERS OF BOTH ANIME AND THE NEW LIVE-ACTION MOVIE, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK). When I first watched the original Fullmetal Alchemist Anime back in high school, I liked it, and then I watched it's movie sequel Conqueror of Shamballa and it was great, but then I watched Brotherhood and Sacred Star of Milos and FMA became my number one favorite anime series of all time, ranking top among my personal favorite anime such as Hellsing and Black Lagoon. It may come as no surprise when I say that I like anime's that are purely original, I don't like anime that have emo-based protagonists with a harem problem, heavily based in Japan, have characters with crazy hair styles, have a heavy emphasis on sex appeal and over-exaggerated comedy, and drag on for more than 100-200 episodes, I would've loved Naruto if I didn't have to watch all 500+ episodes of it and I would've loved Fairy Tail if every single female character didn't have massive boobs and ridiculous combat outfits, don't get me wrong, I like boobs, I like big boobs, I like long-running shows, I just don't like TOO big show-it-to-the-world boobs and shows that run too long, sure Hellsing's Seras Victoria had big boobs, but the anime didn't focus on them that much due to them being covered up most if not all the time. Fullmetal Alchemist doesn't contain any of those any of those anime-cliche tropes, and neither does the life action movie. This, along with the Phoenix Wright live action movie, are live-action anime movie adaptions done right, to some degree. I find it weird that both movies use Japanese Actors/Actresses to portray Western Characters, but I guess this is because of the intended target audience of both of those movies being Japan, the Ghost in the Shell movie uses Western Actors/Actresses to Portray Japanese Characters because the target audience was the west (Keep in mind I haven't seen the GITS anime and live action movie). So I watched the Fullmetal Alchemist movie last night on Netflix with low expectations because I thought it wasn't going to be good, and while the beginning of the movie started off pretty weak, the rest of it took me went strong and even took me completely by surprise at some moments. I always wondered how they were going to fit the plot of a 64 Episode anime into a 1-2 hour long movie, and believe it or not, they actually managed to pull it off quite well, half-way anyways. The FMA Live-Action movie is mostly based off the Brotherhood/Manga version of FMA and starts from when Ed and Al confront Father Cornello and ends when Mustang Incinerates Lust, so basically Episode 3 "City Of Hersey" to Episode 19 "Death of the Undying", noticed that I said "Mostly". While the plot of the movie is based on the Brotherhood version, it also barrows some elements from the original 2003 version and some of the later parts of the Brotherhood version make it early in the movie, one of these elements being the Mannequins soldiers that weren't seen in Brotherhood until the fourth season are brought in the moment before Mustang kills Lust in the movie. One example is in the 2003 version of FMA, Dr. Marcoh is murdered by Lust after questioning him about what he told Ed and Armstrong whereas in Brotherhood he is taken prisoner by Lust to be used as a sacrifice after Ed and Armstrong leave town. In the Live-Action movie, Ed and Winry are on their way back to see Tucker (Yes, the best-loving and caring father of year is in this movie too, they haven't forgot about him, we certainty didn't.) when Winry see and recognizes Marcoh from a picture that either Hughes or Mustang gives to Ed and meet him in his house when Marcoh confronts them with a shotgun as opposed to a pistol. Once Marcoh is about to tell Ed and Winry the secret of the Philosopher's Stone, he shoots at Lust who appears in a window and Lust murders Marcoh in front of Ed and Winry. It doesn't stop there, the Nina-Alexander Chimera scene happens right after this, like two-minutes after Lust murders Marcoh in front of Winry and Ed. But the one scene that took me completely by surprise in the movie was the death of Hughes, not only was it done differently from the anime, it was done even better in my opinion. Just like in the original, Hughes finds out about the human experiments and is shot and killed by Envy when trying to contact Mustang in a telephone booth, I knew the scene was coming but not how I expected it. When the gun is pulled on Hughes and he turns around to see who it is, I was expecting Maria Ross, but it was actually Mustang Envy posed as instead, which made me go "wait, what?". Better yet, in the Brotherhood version, there weren't any witnesses who saw Hughes' murder even though the officials say there were, but in the movie we see an elderly couple run away after Envy-Mustang shoots and kills Hughes. The movie play with your expectations quite a lot when it comes to it's story, you may think that something will happen the same way, but it doesn't and it happens in a different way while staying true to the original narrative, just like the Red Wright case in Phoenix Wright plays differently in the game than it does in the movie but still has the same plot point. There are some gripes I had with this movie though, like I said before it started off pretty weak. The first two minutes show the Elric Brothers showing objects they transmuted with Alchemy to Trisha, who suddenly faints in front of them after congratulating them. But instead of being horrified at fist sight like in the Brotherhood version where Ed and Al find their mother of the floor, Ed and Al just stare at her for several seconds with blatant expressions before calling her name. The funeral scene happens and Ed and Al try to bring back Trisha with human transmutation, which of course doesn't go well, but the two weirdest things that happen during this scene is during the human transmutation, one is when the house get's torn up in some sort of vortex tornado and Ed and Al are sucked in it as opposed to just the black hands taking their limbs and bodies. The second thing is, and this is probably due to some law Japan have against the portrayal of child-endangerment in shows, but when Ed is thrown out of the vortex with is leg missing after the transmutation fails, he is suddenly 10 years older, like he already is has the braided pony-tail and post-puberty voice. Probably the most hilarious thing I found with the movie is Ed's height, yes there are short-jokes in this movie about Ed, yet Edward is as tall as Winry in the movie, nearly half the height of Al, and almost as tall as Hughes. There were some characters that didn't make into the movie such as the Armstrongs, Scar, Barry the Chopper, and Fuhrer Bradley (although he is mentioned), but since the ending leaves on a cliffhanger, it could spawn a potential sequel where these characters will make an appearance. Oh, and there is an after-credits scene with Envy. Final Verdict - 9/10 Pros- Slightly Different but faithful narrative, plays with your expectations Good relationship development, especially between Ed and Al. Strong conclusion and cliffhanger for a sequel. A good refreshing experience from the original. Tucker gets fucking wrecked by Ed a lot worse than in the anime, he is actually worse in the movie than he is in the animes. Good CGI, especially on the Alchemy, Chimeras (They were effigies than Chimeras) and Al, in my opinion. Good music. Good and emotional fight scenes, especially the fight between Ed and Al in Lab #5. Cons- Weak and confusing beginning, especially the Father Cornello scene, but the fight was pretty good. Edward is too tall to be called short. Some poor acting but nothing noticeable. - @Tuesday, February 20, 2018 10:34 PM

I'm honestly not at all bothered by most of the stuff here. One thing I'm hoping, though, is that that weird swirly thing at the beginning isn't how the alchemy looks in it. Maybe human transmutation, but normal transmutation needs more lightning. - @Friday, January 26, 2018 9:30 PM
