Retired naturalist and wolf expert Russell Core journeys to the edge of civilization in northern Alaska at the pleading of Medora Slone, a young mother whose son was killed by a pack of wolves. As Core attempts to help Medora track down the wolves who took her son, a strange and dangerous relationship develops between the two lonely souls. But when Medora's husband Vernon returns home from the Iraq War, the news of his child's death ignites a violent chain of events. As local cop Donald Marium races to stop Vernon's vengeful rampage, Core is forced on a perilous odyssey into the heart of darkness.

I feel like I’m one of 5 people that actually understood this movie. For those slapping the label of "this movie made no sense" take a minute to read deeper (at least read an online review). The central theme is about man being pulled back to his darker animalistic side. The remote and mostly dark Alaskan wilderness drives people insane and pulls people towards that darkness as we see in Medora, Vernon and his friend. Their brutality and actions seems unrealistic at first until you see it through the lens of them acting more like animals; completely caring for their own but willing to kill in a heartbeat. This is an idea I’ve tried to capture in my own writing and this movie does that part wonderfully! Hence Russel must “hold [back] the dark” and not become like them. I have three main gripes with this movie: A) I partially disappointed in the ending because thematically I’m unsure what it achieved. Which leads into B) Russell isn’t a particularly interesting character. Maybe he’s different in the book and normally I’m perfectly fine with a more tertiary character. But if they wanted to drive home the theme of “holding back the dark” we should have seen Russell struggling with his own brutality. C) technically minor. I don’t care how green some of your officers are, there is no way a force of that size would get mowed down by one guy in a wooden barn. I watched this because of Alexander Skarsgård. Spoiler Alert: At first it's great but keeps on building and building like wtf Vernon just killed everyone he met. The end and I don't understand a thing so I have to googled for an explanation. Heck, Medora and Vernon are twins.
