Christ almighty, Saoirse is spectacularly beautiful in this film. Her acting is also just incredible. There's a scene near the end of the film where Edward is calling her a fraud and frigid and the look of pure anguish, hurt and devastation on her face is unreal. I don't think I've seen another actor or actress display those emotions in such a masterful, convincing way. It tore my soul in two when I saw her in such emotional pain in that scene, that's when you know an actor is good, when it makes you almost cry for them. - @Sunday, October 28, 2018 2:18 PM

SPOILERS👇 Just finished watching this and I have to wonder if the people who wrote reviews of this film on IMBD had even watched the same film as I. This wasn't about two sexually repressed, or even awkward, people! This was a film about 2 broken people who didn't know who they were, trying to find their way in life equipped with very little guidance but much childhood trauma. It was sad yet beautiful and I cared what happens to these 2 seemingly childlike people. The ending left me unsatisfied but not surprised, of course she would marry Charles - she could absolutely control him so she felt safe. In spite of the ending the film overall was wonderful. The 3 things which really stood out for me: Florence's relationship with Edward's mother, and Edward maintaining his dignity in not bowing to his wife's "solution" to her problem. I must say though, I found it difficult to sympathize with Florence because she seemed selfish, cold and hard, but given her past... Edward just seemed to drift and bum around, uncertain of anything but his regret of the event which took place over a 6 hour period in 1962. I found his sensitivity endearing and his enduring love for Florence adoring. And Chesil beach. I'll never visit it.
