This documentary follows two young African-Americans through their high school years as they perfect their skills in basketball in the hopes of getting a college scholarship and eventually play in the NBA. Arthur Agee and William Gates both show great potential and are are actively recruited as they look to enter high school. They start off at the same high school but unable to pay an unexpected bill for tuition fees, Arthur has to withdraw and go to the local public high school. The film follows them through their four years of high school and their trials and tribulations: injuries, slumps and the never ending battle to maintain their grades. Through it all, their hoop dreams continue.

Great movie! Anyone knows how to get hold of the song "Dream Theme" by Tom Yore? It's not on the original Hoop Dreams soundtrack. It's the song that plays as Arthur Magee plays mini basketball in his room in the first third of the movie, and as he graduates, I guess. Relaly what this movie does is use the two kids and basketball as a lens for us to view not only their successes and their story, but to view problems with society as a whole. this is why I love this movie. because it isnt just a film about basketball. i rather dislike basketball, hate playing it, watching it, whatever. I love this film, but can't help but feel that the trailer misses the point of it: it's not really an inspiring story of beating the odds, it's a harrowing study of two boys struggling in a society that's against them every step of the way. Man I'm searchin another basketball movie I saw years ago but can't remember the name. Also looked for it on google without success. It was about some guys struggling, but a man comes and coaches them, then they start to progress, one of the guys was named Casey if I'm not mistaking, he was like a lil retarded, their coach then manages to make them start to really play well.
