After a bleak childhood, Jane Eyre goes out into the world to become a governess. As she lives happily in her new position at Thornfield Hall, she meets the dark, cold, and abrupt master of the house, Mr. Rochester. Jane and her employer grow close in friendship and she soon finds herself falling in love with him. Happiness seems to have found Jane at last, but could Mr. Rochester's terrible secret be about to destroy it forever?

If you read the book you'll understand that it's not just a "romantic tale". It's more than that and it contains goth elements and has a very dark atmosphere. The movie failed to revive such tension in order to attract the simple minded women's population. Even so, the movie isn't that bad. Half of this isn't even in the movie. One of the best speeches from the book where he talks about "Floating gently in the stream of life unaware of the rocks waiting to dash you to pieces", you'll find that scene in the deleted scenes.
