There's a reason Experience Hendrix L.L.C. wouldn't release the rights to Jimi's music for this film. What sources of information did Ridley use for this movie? The movies dotted with fictitious events, urban legend and historical inaccuracies. Poor Jimi, not around to stop all the posthumous trash that continues to be released without his approval. This movie was a complete let down, besides Andre 3000 as Hendrix who I thought was good, the story was awful. For most of the film it was just Hendrix arguing with his girlfriend and feeling like shit. There were so few scenes of him shredding on guitar I think the film maker forgot he could even play. Should have been called "Jimi part I"...it ENDS just BEFORE he plays Monterey? That's like an Elvis movie ending right after he performs a few times in Memphis. Jimi was famous before that point (but mostly only in London), but his records were not selling yet, and I'm no Jimi historian, but I think that he only had a few singles released prior to Monterey. It was like watching a Soap Opera called "As the Jimi turns", it was too focused on his romantic affairs and trivial conversations. Now if this included a "disk 2" I'd give it a 10. It was worth seeing as a Jimi fan, but I feel it could have been so much better if only it spanned a longer time frame from say, like when he arrived in England to the time that he accidentally overdosed. - @Saturday, November 19, 2016 4:21 AM

What a great movie! André Benjamin is perfect as Jimi Hendrix. In most scenes, he looks exactly like Hendrix. In all scenes, he speaks like Hendrix! The only flaw in this movie is that the "Jimi Hendrix Estate" wouldn't allow this movie to play his original songs!?!? That's why this movie gets panned by everyone! I believe that Jimi Hendrix, HIMSELF, would have been pissed-off about that! If the movie producers were allowed to create scenes with Jimi Hendrix's 'Original Songs,' this movie could-and-would have been as big as "The Doors"(1991) by Oliver Stone. The same with the Brian Jones movie "Stoned"(2005)...no original music was allowed!?!? WTF! That KILLS the movie in many ways! I just gave it 1 star on Netflix. Andre 3000 done a really good job as Jimi ( the other actors were good too) but I'm so disappointed the writers portrayed him in that way. What are they trying to do to his legacy? I've seen many documentaries interviews and read loads of articles over the years but never heard of him beating women or being violent in anyway shape or form. I was relieved to find a web page straight away that tells of everyone who knew Jimi, personally, testifying to the domestic abuse portrayal as false. Another major disappointment was the lack of Hendrix in the sound track but now I understand and fully support the Hendrix family's disassociation to this movie. This film sacrificed some really exciting, uplifting and historical moments in music history for some depressing, fictional (bullshit would be more appropriate) drama that totally shat on and disrespected the memory of, by all accounts, a peace loving, fun loving, good person. Why? Not to boost ratings. If anything it's off-putting. I do not recommend this film to Hendrix fans. - @Wednesday, July 1, 2015 12:17 AM

I know a few things about 50s and 60s music, but not much about Jimi Hendrix. I was trying to use this biopic to learn a bit about him. Now that I've seen it I must say I'm so glad it's over. Boring and dull dialogues. And if you're not particularly into his music, you're pretty nerv-wrecked by the end of the film. She spoke up before the 2014 movie was released, saying that writer and director John Ridley hadn’t consulted her, and that scenes that showed Hendrix being violent to her were works of fantasy. Hendrix biographer Charles R Cross last year condemned the production, saying: “I interviewed 325 people, from family members to friends. I never heard a story that’s even close to that.” Now Etchingham tells Rich Davenport: “The whole story is a fabrication. Even the things that did happen have not been produced accurately. “John Ridley didn’t consult me, so I don’t know where he got it from. Apparently Jimi beat my head in with a telephone receiver and then beat me up in the street. They’ve got me taking an overdose of tablets and being in hospital. None of these things happened. “I was completely shocked. If somebody beat you up like that, the police would be involved. If you took an overdose a psychiatrist would be involved. With the National Health Service your medical records stay with you for life. I’d be quite happy to produce them – there’d be nothing in there.” She says she contacted Ridley as soon as she heard the movie, starring Outkast rapper Andre Benjamin, was to be made. “I wrote a nice email saying, ‘If you need any help don’t hesitate to ask.’ He didn’t even have the common courtesy to say thanks but no thanks. He didn’t respond. He went out of his way not to talk to me. “But he still maintains he spoke to Jimi’s friends. I know them all – and none of them have heard of John Ridley.” Etchingham, who met Hendrix the day he arrived in London, says the guitar icon was a very different man to the one portrayed in All Is By My Side. “He wasn’t drugged up or drunk at all,” she recalls. “He was so determined to make something of himself and show what he could do. It was all very busy. You can be an excellent pilot, but if the plane is crap it's going to crash. I am a fan of Mr. HENDRIX, and I felt Andrew played him well, but a movie should entertain, this movie fell to do that. It made me feel like I was watching a bunch of editing floor cuts, if you want to hear any Hendrix music don't watch this but if you want to see alot of self loathing, unfinished plots, and references to all the great people around him this movie is for you. I was a little disappointed. I found that the actors, particularly Andrè Benjaming, did a great job, but I felt that this movie could have done so much more interesting with the whole concept. I mean, this is Jimi- fucking-Hendrix, one of the most revered musicians of the 20th century! Granted, I obviously do not know Jimi Hendrix the person, but when I listen to his music or watch some video footage I just can't identify THAT Jimi with the Jimi portrayed in the movie: A bunch of average blues licks, some random mystical mumbo-jumbo about love, life and creativity that makes him look like a empty new age poser... and a somewhat misogynistic attitude? I don't know. Again, I don't know Jimi Hendrix and I don't know or care what was true or fictional in the movie, I just think that the flick fails to portray the intensity of Jimi Hendrix, that same feel that melts my brain out when I listen to his music or read about his life - @Friday, February 6, 2015 1:06 PM
