If it was made back in 1975, I imagine Jodorowsky's Dune would have been an obscure and bizarre masterpiece that people more than likely got stoned to, not unlike his other films such as The Holy Mountain. Nobody would like that it was twelve hours, though; people look at movies that are a third that legnth and call them way too long. That movie would have definitely changed people's lives and be seen as an extraordinary masterwork of a film, but it would not change cinema history like Star Wars did. And it certainly would not have been the cinematic muse it ended up becoming. - @Thursday, October 11, 2018 1:20 AM

I'm so glad this guy didn't rape Dune with his wacky nonsensical idea for a movie. Dune is grounded in logic, philosophy, social drama and facing up to harsh reality. It's a very dark and hard and real franchise. Jodorowsky's vision for Dune looks like Walt Disney took LSD while suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. It may have looked great cinematically but I'm fucking relieved this never hit the big screens. - @Wednesday, November 15, 2017 6:58 AM

We need more people like Jodorowsky in the industry now. People who take making films personally, as a spiritual pursuit and not a mere money-making venture. People who refuse to meet the audience's expectations but seek to blast them apart and blow them away! We need a team of spiritual warriors in our film industry! - @Sunday, June 18, 2017 4:21 AM

If his movie was to be made in the 70's it probably wouldn't have looked that good if it were pre-Star Wars. If it were left to the late 70's it probably would've been awesome. Please Disney, let this guy do a stand alone Star Wars film exploring more about the Force. - @Wednesday, April 19, 2017 8:14 PM

It would have been great if Jodorowsky has said yes to Trumbull, because he received him, and if he could have thought of the idea of spliting his version of Dune into several films and shooting the first two hours of it and see what was gonna happen with the audience. Last time I saw this Documentary those were my thoughts. Imagine, if his Dune failed, we still could have gotten 2 hours of that unsuccesful and dissapointing "trash". Because is clear the producers were willing to give money, of course putting certain "rules". But instead he paid the price and might have realise about it when his Incal and Metabarons were published in parts, he might have understood then that if part one isn't succesful then part two was never gonna happen. Maybe the ultimate failure of this film isn't actually the Hollywood system but the system within Jodorowsky himself, which I can relate to, totally sympathize with, which is a burden sometimes, and you just wish to escape from it. - @Thursday, December 22, 2016 10:18 AM

El inglés de Jodorowsky es insufrible... casi tanto como sus consejos de Psicomagia. Jodorowsky´s English is unbearable. Almost like his Psicomagical tips. - @Saturday, July 30, 2016 4:47 AM

Let's not fool ourselves; Jodorowsky's adaptation of Dune would have been an utter train wreck on film.  A really, REALLY fascinating one.  I wish it could have been made.  I hope someday too, the storyboards and artwork in that giant book he sent to the studios can be made available in print for everyone to enjoy. - @Tuesday, December 9, 2014 4:46 PM

This would have been Amazing! too bad most of hollywood is full of boring slugs , cookie cutters, and plastic people.  Hopefully this will be put into motion in an animated movie at the very least.     - @Sunday, December 7, 2014 6:02 PM

This might have been a great movie. Who knows? But we know one thing for sure, it definitely wouldn't have been a good adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel. David Lynch's version was by no means perfect but he did at least kind of get the feel of the book right. - @Sunday, November 2, 2014 3:40 AM

Saw this today in London and highly recommend it. The screening was followed by an on-stage interview with Jodorowsky, who is 85 but you would never know it: he was sharp, funny and 100% passionate. Do see the film if you get the opportunity.  - @Friday, July 4, 2014 11:38 PM

So beautiful and perfect a film on a film that was never made. And then Hollywood did the same thing to him that they did to Orson Welles. Fear of intelligence and vision. - @Friday, June 6, 2014 9:07 AM

For people who are more interested in the 'what might have been' details, including an outline of the screenplay and samples of artwork, go to www.duneinfo.com ( this is the Dune - Behind the Scenes website) and click on the Jodorowsky's Dune entry.  I'm old enough to remember when this project was being kicked around.  I honestly don't know how I would have felt about the film if it had been made; I was greatly influenced by the first Dune novel, which IMO has to this day never been done justice on screen, and Jodorowsky's treatment differs so much from the source material that it's barely the same work.  If it were made today, I can't imagine there not being an online backlash from the readership online.  One of our local movie critics (who loved this film) notes that Jodorowsky never read the book, which would have outraged me when I was a yoot.  You have never seen outrage until you've seen nerd outrage.  All that being said, I loved the pre-production art design, which has appeared in numerous movies since. Saw the film last night in Seattle. Inspiring and heartbreaking. Jodorosky bubbles over with vision, passion, and charm. His tales of discovering, enticing, and seducing the key design and effects team along with the cast are a revelation. Though this film was never made, ideas and designs from this film continued to show up in movies from Star Wars (1977) through Prometheus (2012). Strongly recommend you see Jodorosky's Dune. - @Tuesday, May 6, 2014 5:22 PM

As sad as I am that Jodorowsky didn't get to complete his Dune, much of his work, love and vision ended up being put into his comic series' that came later. The Incal, The Metabarons, The Technopriests, etc. are all amazing, and if after having watched this doc you yearn to see some of the inspired madness that would have been J's Dune, check those out; they are all his children. - @Wednesday, April 23, 2014 6:37 AM

It is hard to see where this version of Dune might have become. His description of what he wanted to do with Dune is very exciting. We are in dire need of reclaiming science fiction from the mediocre hands of uninspired hacks and restore to science fiction the sense of wonder it once had. Nowadays anything calling itself science fiction is nothing more than an action movie. It may have a seed of good idea but lacks the bold vison of a Jodorowsky or a Stankley Kubrick who are unconcerned on a certain level about pandering to an audience's expectations. They want to elevate the genre from space operas and confrontations with Big-Eyed Monsters into something more mystical but still very human. I am personally glad that no one has yet attempted to film my own favorite science fiction book A Stranger In a Strange Land. They will ultimately ruin it because there are really no directors of vision with the delicate hand to bring this book to life and not allow it to devolve into an action movie. I would have loved to see the H.R. Giger designs come to life or the realization of the illustrations of the late great Moebius. I have seen virtually all of Jodorowsky's films (at least, those available) and cannot see this being anything more than a big pretentious mess of a movie. To quote The Hollow Men: Between the Idea and the Reality, Between the Motion and the Act Falls the Shadow. It is in the shadowy area were something may get lost in the translation and the realization of very noble concepts and where many artists have gotten themselves lost. It would have been something to see Salvador Dali and Orson Welles in the same film. I am going to make the trek up into Manhattan's Film Forum to catch this. I know it will play nowhere in my area. - @Monday, March 17, 2014 6:26 AM

Seriously is the stand alone masterpiece DUNE unfilmable? Many people said that the Lord of The Rings was unfilmable and now before every damn nerd has a shit fit nerd stroke I am aware the things left out of the LOTR films and what was added for some damn reason?!?! but it still holds water as a great version if not the only really sans the Ralph Bakshi debacle. I truly believe, DUNE  can be made into a game changing film, but it has to be in the hands of a master and not some hollywood garbage. A trilogy or even more like the length of the Harry Potter films is a great route. Ultimately it has to be treated as the holy text that it pretty much is and it's a shame the mantle hasn't been properly donned as it were. For fucks sake they were gonna let that fuck hole trash peddler Peter Berg try to make it...holy dog balls. Why not just let some Kardashian piece of shit spray paint the Sistine Chapel while your at it? I truly hope a solid version of this amazing Novel can be made properly into a film in my lifetime but here's to dreaming. Shai Hulud! - @Saturday, February 22, 2014 2:17 AM
