20,000 Japanese, including 12,000 of the Pacific South Seas Regiment - Veterans - landed at Buna/Gona. 8,000 pushed inland. 542 Australian Militia soldiers opposed. Too little literature is available about the odds. Too little information tells the story. As they were pushed back, finally with reinforcements filtering through, the Australians were ordered to stand and hold the Japanese or die trying.
