Marnie Edgar is a habitual liar and a thief who gets jobs as a secretary and after a few months robs the firms in question, usually of several thousand dollars. When she gets a job at Rutland's, she also catches the eye of the handsome owner, Mark Rutland. He prevents her from stealing and running off, as is her usual pattern, but also forces her to marry him. Their honeymoon is a disaster and she cannot stand to have a man touch her and on their return home, Mark has a private detective look into her past. When he has the details of what happened in her childhood to make her what she is, he arranges a confrontation with her mother realizing that reliving the terrible events that occurred in her childhood and bringing out those repressed memories is the only way to save her.

How annoying that we don't get to see the end of the movie - plus all the bad editing that crops the screen so we have chopped off heads etc... Mr Hitchcock doesn't seem to realise that through his films we see what a sick bastard he was. As for his obsession with Hedren, she can't act for toffee so there was just his obsession with sexy objectified blonds that had her starring in this film. Sean Connery showed her what acting is supposed to look like. - @Friday, August 31, 2018 1:49 AM

This is the movie Tippi was working on when Hitchcock sexually harassed her. He told her if she didn't sleep with him he would ruin her career. He did. But, recently, because of "ME TOO" she just came out saying it was sexual not because of certain roles she refused. - @Tuesday, April 24, 2018 10:11 PM

The production values are rather poor for a Hitchcock movie as the sets are cramped and there are too many back screen projections. Sean Connery gives a better than average performance because he has more to work with. The story has a good deal of intrigue and is interesting. - @Tuesday, March 13, 2018 2:23 AM

I just watched it on TV today. It's very BORING. Hardly anything happens and Tippi is her usually frail self. She represents everything women hate about Hollywood. She is terrified of lightning and freaks out like a scared kitten over and over in the film. Her acting is hilarious because the material is so poor. - @Wednesday, December 27, 2017 5:43 AM

This is a story about a mentally sick woman and even sicker man. Marnie is suffering from a trauma from her childhood (She killed one of her mother's client, since her mom was a prostitute). He is otherwise, from a wealthy family and is a hunter. One of his prey is Marnie and as you see he takes advantage of her being terrified by the storm and especially the color of the red. He start kissing her at the moment that she is paralyzed by the fear of the storm, since the night that she killed her mother's client was storming and the lightening reflection on the bloody body of the man who she killed is a terrifying flashback. - @Wednesday, December 20, 2017 10:06 PM

He was a psycopath, twisted, cruel person who liked to watch his first blonde actresses suffer. Tippi (Melanie Griffith's mather) was his favourite victim. Not only she never worked for him but need psycologist help and spoil her career. - @Sunday, August 13, 2017 10:27 AM

Alfred Hitchcock wanted Marnie to be the best film he had ever made but when he started falling out with Tippi Hedren he lost interest in making the film - @Monday, February 20, 2017 1:52 PM

Fucking bitch got Stockholm syndrome, who the fuck... SPOILER ALERT Decides to stay with their rapist, even if he "understood her traumas at the end". This guy's a rapist (yeah she's a thief, but that's a forgivable crime, she killed someone but that was self defense and she was a kid) He deserves some kind of punishment, even if that means she goes to jail too! - @Thursday, February 2, 2017 5:20 PM

What makes the film for me is Louise Latham as Bernice Edgar, the most forbidding and warped mother in a Hitchcock film since Madame Leopoldine Konstantin in "Notorious." Great introductory work as well by Mariette Hartley, Bruce Dern as the sailor who's killed, and Melody Thomas Scott as the child Marnie, who later went on to decades as Nikki Reed Newman on "Young & the Restless." - @Saturday, April 25, 2015 10:15 AM

I am a great fan of Hitchcock's films, however, it is apparent to me why "Marnie" was not a commercial and critical success; the character of Marnie is so inherently unsympathetic for the majority of the film, that it is virtually impossible to identify with her. The audience comes to realize that she is psychologically damaged, and sexually repressed but Sean Connery's character, Mark Rutland, is such an inherently decent man and she rebuffs him at every turn. Consequently, it is difficult to understand why he continues to tolerate her aberrant behavior. The film almost borders on self parody at times, particularly in the state room scene between Connery and Hedren, in which she emerges from the bathroom dressed in a nightgown that looks like an overcoat, while Connery is contemplating a night of passion with her. The film is shot beautifully, Connery and Hedren do their best to enliven the characters and Herrmann's score is superb, but  I honestly don't think that Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in their prime could have rehabilitated this story. - @Monday, October 20, 2014 1:55 PM

I've not yet seen this movie but I'm guessing it provides Sean Connery with more of an acting opportunity than Bond would ever have allowed him. - @Sunday, October 5, 2014 5:03 PM
