Action Drama History War

6.8 / 10

The summer of 1942 brought Naval stalemate to the Pacific as the American and Japanese fleets stood at even numbers each waiting for the other to begin a renewed offensive. "Midway" tells the story of this historic June battle where a Japanese carrier force, in an attempt to occupy Midway island and lure the American fleet to destruction, was meet valiently by US forces operating off of three aircraft carriers and numerous escort ships. It was the first battle in which naval air power was extensivly used, and at its conclusion the Japanese Carrier force had been completly destroyed which lead the way for the US 1943 and 44 offensives which would eventually bring the Pacific War to a close.

Battle of Midway was turning point at the War in the Pacific. 4 Jap Carriers and a strike force supported by destroyers, few Battleships, Mikuma and Mogami class battle cruisers stashed against 3 American Carriers few battleships, heavy battle cruisers and destroyers but they still managed to sink em all. It was the brains of Bull Halsey, solid tactician Commander Jessup, Bait of fresh water condenser Code AF, clever planning, search planes, dive bombing and torpedo bombing strategy along-with extra fuel that did the trick against the mighty Japs in 1942.....! Japs never recovered from this disastrous loss till their defeat in Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear attack that ended WWII in 1945. - @Tuesday, December 18, 2018 10:48 PM

Because of this movie George Lucas wanted to use Sensurround for Star Wars (which came out a year later).  Universal would not license the technology to Lucas.  So Lucas went to Dolby Labs to have them come up with a similar equivalent to Sensurround.  Dolby's answer is what we now know as the .1 channel.  Like in 5.1 and 7.1 Dolby Stereo. - @Friday, November 29, 2013 6:00 PM

I used to love when it was holidays when being kid, the shown alot great movies Westerns, War Movies, Cartoons , Comedies, like Laurel&Hardy and great series such as Man from Unccle , MacGyver, Airwolf etc... Now these last 15 years we have NOTHING more only CSI over and over new series that are already boring and stupid TV programs to know what damn to do if a woman is pregnant!!?? Go to your damn doctor plain easy - @Saturday, June 15, 2013 2:55 AM

When I was a kid, this used to be on TV every year. We didn't have VCRs back then so I was always sure to watch it. My heros were the guys in torpedo 8, especially the rear gunners. When they got shot down it killed me. - @Friday, January 18, 2013 11:39 PM

Watched this film earlier today on TV. Dissappointed by the number of scenes cut from other movies and original footage. So many glaring errors. If you watch the trailer look out for the German Stuka at 28 seconds. A clip from the Battle of Britain, released in 1969. There are some aerial shots Spitfires and Messerschmitts during the film as well. I can only conclude that it was made 'on the cheap'. - @Sunday, July 29, 2012 9:14 PM

Why did they stop making such kind of movies? I think it was the last big one. Watched it in cinema in Brcko, Yugoslavia, in 1976 or 1977. - @Wednesday, July 4, 2012 5:01 PM

In "Sensurround"! I saw this move at one of the old downtown theatres in Pittsburgh, PA back in 1976. The Warner I think. It was really loud! - @Sunday, May 27, 2012 11:19 PM

This movie was presented "IN SENSAROUND" when I saw it at the theater as a kid. A short lived audio gimmick that was super loud. I guess they had to quit doing it because people complained about the noise. I'm still trying to find the opening speech that announced very dramatically "THE FOLLOWING FILM IS IN SENSAROUND!!!" - @Saturday, March 10, 2012 12:29 AM

Looks more like a Japanese victory if you ask me about the frequency of attacks. Besides that, I would never expect a Corsair, a Helldiver or a Hellcat at Midway. - @Saturday, July 23, 2011 1:02 AM

LOL how many movies used that same scene with the B-17 bomber trying to land on one wheel? It was in Tora Tora Tora, Midway, and I think it was also in a movie about General MacArthur. - @Thursday, May 19, 2011 3:50 PM

SupportingActor, hi again. Another of the flim's defaults is the lesser attention given to show the japanese carriers' destruction: there are some fragmentary views, but not large frescoes. I think that's due to budget limits. Regrettable. But, in spite of all, "Midway" is a film worthy to be seen again & again. It has the 2 things that make a film durable: intelligent script & good music. I enjoy it every time I see it. Thanks again! - @Monday, August 23, 2010 6:12 PM

SupportingActor many thanks from Lima, Perú. I saw the film in 1976 & now I've got it in DVD. It's a delight to see so many remembered actors: Robert Ito (yes: Dr. Quincy's assistant!!), and future stars: Tom Selleck, Erik Estrada & Pat Morita. For me, James Shigeta deserved to be counted in the starring list, before, indeed, to Mitchum, Wagner or Coburn. His role as Nagumo is superb, but understimated by the director. It lacks a final sequence with him after the battle. Thanks again. - @Monday, August 23, 2010 5:21 PM

@McGruff5150 Erik Estrada did this film before he became well-known as "Ponch" on TV. Another one of his earlier movies where he played a small supporting role was the blockbuster AIRPORT 1975. - @Friday, August 13, 2010 7:26 PM

The editing and special effects did leave much to be desired. Aside from recycling footage from "Tora, Tora, Tora!", if you look closely you'll discover that not only does Tom Selleck appear in the movie, he appears as two different characters! With and without his mustache! Despite all this, it was miles better than the '75 remake of "King Kong!" which was still in the theatres at the time. - @Saturday, August 22, 2009 2:57 AM

This is my favorite WWII movie!!!!!! I got complete chills watching this trailer just now!!!!! The battle scenes, in my opinion, are superior to any WWII battle scenes from any WWII movie (I'm not just talking aboot the recycled scenes in this movie, but the original ones as well). Tora! Tora! Tora! is probably my second favorite. The ending with Yamamoto saying his infamous line ALWAYS jolts my body with chills because of its awesomeness!!!!! - @Wednesday, May 20, 2009 1:23 AM
