Genres & Description

Action Drama Mystery Romance

7.6 / 10

Three students and a school teacher disappear on an excursion to Hanging Rock, in Victoria, on Valentine's Day, 1900. The movie follows those that disappeared, and those that stayed behind, but it delights in the asking of questions, not the answering of them. Even though both the movie and the book it was based on claim to be inspired by real events, the story is completely fictional.

The strange thing is that I've seen two very different versions of this movie. I saw it when it came out. Then years later. One of the things I vividly remember from the first viewing was the rocks and red smoke. Ominous music. That image repeated throughout the film. Second time, no rocks with red smoke at all. Plus the story was quite different. One was subdued and the other version very gothic with lots of surreal odd events. Could there have been two versions? - @Sunday, October 7, 2018 3:27 AM

Seems like I watched this back in the 1970's on PBS and it's about a group of girls who simply disappear. - @Friday, August 17, 2018 2:23 PM

Several musical pieces are, for some reason I do not fathom, played in extremely slow tempo such as "God Save the Queen" , a famous Mozart number and, from another British song of the 19th Century that I've only heard once before, and that was in the great movie "Zulu" when the tiny regiment at Rourke's Drift repel the first massive assault of the eight thousand man Zulu army. - @Wednesday, June 27, 2018 6:50 PM

Ugh. I know this is a favorite film for a lot of y'all but I find life has enough unsolved mysteries and disturbing disappearances. I prefer fiction with some closure, even if the ending is sad. This just drives me nuts. - @Sunday, June 10, 2018 8:46 AM

so, since everybody is apperantly confused: this is not at all a true story. it is not even based on real events, but rather INSPIRED by true events. If you read the epilogue in the original book I'm sure you'd be aware of that lmao. that was one hell of a plot twist - @Friday, June 8, 2018 12:22 AM

I had seen this movie when i was very young and it left a mark on my mind and heart to know. Did this really happen and remained a mystery. And sometime it crossed my mind after years many times. I wanted to see the movie again but i could not trace it as i didn't remember the name. But yes the picture of Miranda in slow motion in the movie is picture perfect in my mind. i also always loved this name Miranda after watching this movie. I am so glad i am able to see it again and refresh the movie after a long search. - @Thursday, December 7, 2017 10:23 AM

I watched the film for the first time in 2009, I visited Hanging Rock national park in 2014 and it was a mystical experience, I took a friend who had long blonde hair and that added to the mysterious atmosphere of the day. - @Saturday, September 30, 2017 8:00 AM
