Cecily, Reggie, and Wilfred are in a home for retired musicians. Every year, on October 10, there is a concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday and they take part. Jean, who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home and disrupts their equilibrium. She still acts like a diva, but she refuses to sing. Still, the show must go on... and it does.

I stumbled on this wonderful movie only last week, when I bought the DVD & have watched it THREE times already! Billy Connolly is quite brilliant in this mischievous role, Dustin Hoffman's direction is excellent, the music throughout is marvellous & having been through a divorce, I empathised with Tom Courtenay role, even though his marriage lasted only NINE hours & mine lasted FORTY years! Why this film wasn't nominated for a slew of oscars is beyond me. The acting was superb and sensitively done. It's hard to pick out one of the cast but Pauline Collins was outstanding. Dustin Hoffmans direction was both imaginative and exhilarating. My wife and enjoyed it and so did all the other people that clapped at the end. Admittedly you would have to have an appreciation of music. I had to refrain from whistling so hummed instead. Story was good as well. Billy Connolly played the part of a person who had had a stroke which stopped him censoring invective and crudities. I couldn't help thinking that if Billy ever had such a stroke he wouldn't be acceptable in polite society. It seemed to be 'Type Casting'. no acting required. - @Saturday, January 19, 2013 2:02 AM

This is a wonderful film I saw it at the Dubai Film Festival in December , my daughter lives there & I was spending Xmas with her I had heard of the film as my friends husband had a small part(of which most was cut) .my daughter & I absolutely loved it and at the end of the film people stood & applauded. I do hope Mr. Hoffman can make a sequel there are lots of different stories in this film that could make a follow on.
