Aging ex-marshal Steve Judd is hired by a bank to transport a gold shipment through dangerous territory. He hires an old partner, Gil Westrum, and his young protege Heck to assist him. On the trail, the three get involved in a young woman's desire to escape first from her father, then from her fiance and his dangerously psychotic brothers.

I guess the two old guys wanted to die at the end and just let the other guys shoot at them first. I double dog dare you to gut shoot me. Cause they had more guts than you can hang on a fence. - @Tuesday, October 27, 2015 8:19 PM

It was a movie for Gary Cooper but it was not to be.  These two did just great job. - @Thursday, June 26, 2014 12:38 PM

there's something about joel mccrea that is so real and so unpretentiously decent; I really believe that he himself wanted to--and did--enter his house justified. - @Tuesday, May 27, 2014 6:37 PM

Two of the best western actors, and in Sam;s hands comes a great movie. - @Wednesday, April 23, 2014 12:11 PM

In my view, " Ride The High Country" is Sam Peckinpah's best film hands down. It is perfectly cast, with Joel McCrea giving the performance of his career, and it is a perfect coda to the illustrious career of Randolph Scott; he is humorous, poignant, and plays against his traditional heroic characters beautifully. The cinematography by Lucien Ballard is superb. The script is economical and reminiscent of the director's work on The Rifleman. Only "The Wild Bunch" is comparable in terms of quality - @Tuesday, August 20, 2013 1:10 PM

Just finished watching Ride the High Country for the first time, thanks to TCM. A 2 1/2 minute trailer, even a good one, simply can't do this movie justice. If you aren't a western fan already, this great film might just convert you! - @Saturday, May 18, 2013 7:01 PM

I believe recognition by Randolph Scott's character (Gil Westrum) that he would eventually die and they would see each other again in the afterlife. Interesting debating point! A magnificent film that does not seem to have aged. - @Thursday, July 12, 2012 9:24 PM

@NeoTRP Sooooooooooo? Even if it's true, it doesn't really matter and doesn't make him less good actor, does it? And what you said about Wayne is absurd... - @Monday, November 1, 2010 2:52 PM

I agree. Everyone throws around big-name westerns but more people forget about this one. Great movie. - @Thursday, January 1, 2009 6:20 PM

Edgar Buchanan, had the best dialogue in his scene prior to the nuptials. It should be mandatory at every wedding ceremony. I wish someone would post that section. He said that "Marriage is hard ..it takes a lot of work and the rewards don't come at the beginning..." As a veteran of western cinema appreciation and history, "I'd float my stick" with this film as one of the top ten. Oh,... and as a 37 year veteran of the "marriage dance", I agree with his sage advice. - @Friday, September 19, 2008 12:59 AM

It was Mr. Scott's last, but Mr. McCrea had four more films, Mustang Country (1976), Cry Blood, Apache (1970), Sioux Nation (1970) and The Young Rounders (1966) - @Tuesday, December 4, 2007 7:13 PM

You hit that nail on the head my brother. I will quote you next time I order a double bourbon. The films of Peckinpah clearly define and illustrate both the virtues and abominations of manhood in all of it's existential glory. - @Friday, August 24, 2007 11:23 PM
