Even in a world populated entirely by mechanical beings Rodney Copperbottom is considered a genius inventor. Rodney dreams of two things, making the world a better place and meeting his idol, the master inventor Bigweld. On his journey he encounters Cappy, a beautiful executive 'bot with whom Rodney is instantly smitten, the nefarious corporate tyrant Ratchet who locks horns with Rodney, and a group of misfit 'bots known as the Rusties, led by Fender and Piper Pinwheeler.

This has to be Blue Sky Studios best movie ever made. The character design for these robots are amazing. They have that distinctive scrap metal feel as if you could build one out of spare parts from your garage. They could have gone the generic route and make them electronic with more emphasis on their software. But these things look very alive and it everything in their world seems to make sense for the most part. Robot city has to be one of my many favourite worlds in animation. They seem to have gotten some inspiration from Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927) with the scale and awe of their buildings and robust robots. There's more physics involved in the machinery as to how they work too. But unfortunately Blue Sky's biggest flaw is that their films despite having great animations and designs are always held back by their forgettable stories, characters and concepts. Such a shame.
