Brandon and Philip are two young men who share a New York City apartment. They consider themselves intellectually superior to their friend David Kentley, and as a consequence, decide to murder him. Together they strangle David with a rope and placing the body in an old chest, they proceed to hold a small party. The guests include David's father, his fiancée Janet, and their old schoolteacher Rupert, from whom they mistakenly took their ideas. As Brandon becomes increasingly more daring, Rupert begins to suspect.

Leopold and Loeb was the inspiration behind this Hitchcock film, very good as well by the way. - @Wednesday, October 3, 2018 2:07 AM

Top notch film.John Dall stole the show as the cold blooded ,psychotic killer to Farley Granger's weak accomplice. Obviously done on the cheap ( essentially set in an apartment) but the end product is excellent.Highly recommend it. - @Wednesday, March 7, 2018 10:25 PM

It also eludes me why Rope is rarely named among Hitchcock's best movies. Not top 5, but definitely top 10 for me. If nothing else I found it highly enjoyable. - @Thursday, December 21, 2017 7:06 PM

very much like early tv - @Sunday, February 19, 2017 9:04 PM

I got this on vhs for cheap when I was a kid and enjoyed it a lot - @Sunday, February 19, 2017 9:02 PM

Orson Welles also had extreme long takes in both MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and THE STRANGER, but the studios butchered them. Hitchcock also employed long takes in UNDER CAPRICORN, but no one noticed because the movie was so damned boring. - @Saturday, January 17, 2015 1:22 PM

This film never seems to be in anyone's Top Five list of Hitchcock movies, but it is brilliant. Would-be directors and filmmakers should really look at how a master works. - @Thursday, November 28, 2013 12:44 AM

love the rawness of this movie, some of the edits very poor though. I would rather he just used a standard cutting technique here and there rather than use a substandard edit just to try and force the seamlessness off it. - @Thursday, November 21, 2013 2:10 AM

an experiment that works on so many levels. - @Wednesday, November 20, 2013 3:19 AM

Yes, and there's (at least) one "grab your seats" highly suspenseful scene where I clearly saw his "the bomb doesn't explode" theory in practice. - @Tuesday, November 19, 2013 11:42 PM

I damn-surprisingly loved Rope. It's never cited among his bests, but even a "bad" Hitchcock film had a big lot to teach about tension filmmaking. - @Tuesday, November 19, 2013 11:40 PM
