Oh goodness, this movie had such potential! The good: beautiful scenery, charming music, gorgeous costuming. The premise of the story was great, too. It could have been a sweet, whimsical tale if not for the bad: the dialogue was forced and unnatural, the acting stiff and void of chemistry, which is surprising seeing as they casted Jim Caviezel and Matt Dillon; not exactly lower grade actors. It was set in the 20s yet Joe kept pulling shaka hand signs at people?? I know Hawaii is cool like that but wow, the gesture was so out of place for the time and feel of the movie. Also the two main characters hardly spoke, and yet the audience is supposed to belive they had a deeper connection than school-kid attraction. I literally laughed out loud at the most tragic part of the movie. Let's just say that grandmother should not have been cast. Disappointing, seeing as it could have been a lovely watch if not for the execution!
