Picking up where "Superman: The Movie" left off, three criminals, General Zod (Terence Stamp), Ursa, (Sarah Douglas), and Non (Jack O'Halloran) from the planet Krypton are released from the Phantom Zone by a nuclear explosion in space. They descend upon Earth where they could finally rule. Superman, meanwhile, is in love with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), who finds out who he really is. Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) escapes from prison and is determined to destroy Superman by joining forces with the three criminals.

Wow, the trailer contained almost all of Richard Lester's material. And, it revealed almost the entire plot. It shows Superman flying up to confront General Zod and co. It shouldn't have shown that because Superman has his powers so it trivializes the bit of the movie where he is depowered. It should have shown the scene where Clark Kent is beaten and bloodied by the trucker. That would have piqued more interest, I would think. But the producers probably wanted to show Superman kicking butt and also that was Donner's handy work so I'm not surprised it was omitted from the trailer. - @Thursday, June 14, 2018 1:53 PM

I just watched this again after decades and was struck about several things. One of the comic relief cops who encounters Zod could be Steve Zuckerberg's twin (or the original one from which he was cloned). The other is, this being both a Richard Lester campy sendup, and an early use of prominent product placement, the amount of corporate logos right in your face is almost incredible. Another is what an excellent actor Christopher Reeve was and what a tragedy he had to endure after he was paralyzed, and Margot Kidder getting the Superman curse as well with her losing it mentally when she got older....and also how great an evil character Terence Stamp is, and how funny Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor is and how much the movie picks up whenever he appears...but some creepy little prescient references appear for no explainable reason. Unidentified terrorists in Paris....weirdest of all is the unexplained appearance on the wall of Perry Smith's (the great member of Our Gang, Jackie Cooper) office of a very solemn portrait of Bill Cosby. Of course the effects look a bit sad now, but this movie looked cheaper in every way after the first "Superman" with Christopher Reeve movie. *sigh* - @Monday, June 4, 2018 5:25 PM
