About two different groups of children who encounter one another on a small piece of land in a lake which they both live by. Both groups try to claim the land as theirs and do so role playing as two sets of enemy pirates. Whilst this happens they encounter another boat and a stranger, they must now work together to work out who he is and why he is there, but have they got themselves involved in something much bigger?

The acting is the film besides Kelly McDonald is absolutely terrible. The direction is remarkably scatty as well as there's random close ups and some really weird shots. Also this has as much to do with Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons as Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr Fox has to with Roald Dahl's original masterpiece. That being said the cinematography, costume design and music is all very good and the script is despite being unfaithful did keep me engaged for it's 90 minute runtime. Also the old guy from the old Post Office adverts makes an awesome cameo and his 2 minute appearance really makes this film worth watching. Not at the cinema, which was shown by how-heavily this tanked at the box office, but suppose if it was on BBC 2 on Christmas morning. Never heard of Andrew Scott. Loved the books though. Books with maps inside are the thing! Great stuff for working class kids like me without a hope in hell of having a sailing boat. :) However my kayaks have made up for that somewhat! Might get the film. I think I'm pretty lucky in that I can enjoy books for what they are, and enjoy the films seperately no matter the changes they put in motion. Its a little harsh to judge from this trailer, especially as the producers do have to do something to make it more appealing to modern kids AND give it its own personality away from the previous film and stage versions, otherwise there is no point doing it. The comments are a bit rough.. I'v never seen any movie which followed a book exactly, including the 73 film version of this story. The producers were well aware that a generation that arnt entertained without digital characters being blow up by other digital characters, would not find the original story entertaining as a film. The Captain Flint character is based on Ransome who was infact a spy for a while, and this part of the story is obviously a clever nod to that. Well done to Harbour Pictures for trying to keep it alive. - @Thursday, August 18, 2016 1:29 AM
