A long, long time ago, back in the spring of 1914, they were so happy together. There was Vera Brittain, an upper class girl with ideas of her own; and her bright brother Edward; and his group of friends among whom Roland Leighton, wonderful, handsome, sensitive Roland Vera had fallen for... Always having great times together talking, laughing, exchanging ideas, walking, eating, swimming together; all of them envisioning the glittering future they deserved: Vera, despite her father's opposition, would study at Oxford, marry Roland and be a famous writer; Roland, as for him, would be acclaimed as a great poet while Edward and his friends would each become a prominent figure in his respective field... But then came that fateful day on 4 August 1914 when Britain declared war on Germany. All those beautiful dreams were to be shattered one after the other. All except one: Vera wound up becoming a writer... A writer but a pacifist as well.

This British biographical film is the best exposé of what happens to people in war that I’ve ever seen, made in a manner, as only British film seems to be able. No film I’ve ever watched gripped me with the overall sensuality, the poignancy of what it is to be human as “Testament of Youth”. There is a marvellous subtlety without the overt ‘in your face’ of Hollywood blockbusters. We see portrayed here, the tenderness of first love with all the innocence of youth. What elevates this story from other gems such as Atonement is that the screenwriter adapted her script from Vera Brittain's memoir. (I havent checked, but is that a pen name? Vera -- veracity? Brittain? Add a /t/?) The cinematography is lush, the acting superb. I am puzzled why this film enters theaters so middle of the year rather than the fall in time for Academy consideration. Attention spans in general are iffy. I do hope this one is re-released for Academy members during the lead up to nominations. Wonderfully executed, elegiac, transcendant. I may see it again. I do hope the loutish behavior of some in the audience is not repeated when I go next time. Some people should not attend films of this nature. Enough already!! Kit Harington is an ACTOR!! He's not Jon Snow. It's just his job. It doesn't define him as a person.. You know when his done filming, he put his real life clothes back on and return to his family. I don't think he goes around on his daily life dressed like Jon Snow, chopping off people's head.Stop crying about that and enjoy the trailer.... Atonement, really? Atonement is a movie about the consequences of a crime and a lie and how those two facts tore apart a couple and it spans for sixty years beginning in the 30s. WWII is just a passage in the movie not the entire setting. Testament of Youth is about the ugliness of war and lost. And how to get back into life after you've lost close to everything you've loved deeply BECAUSE of the war. It is a memoir about a "lost generation" It is as far from Atonement as it can be... The only similarties is about the war, not even the same one. Plus, one is a NOVEL the other is a MEMOIR, see the difference. Not all movies about a love and war are necessarily a rip off of Atonement. People complaining about that either didn't watched Atonement, haven't read Testament of Youth or didn't even bother to check out the synopsis of the film...
