Two Catholic schoolgirls Kat (Kiernan Shipka) and Rose (Lucy Boynton) get left behind at their boarding school over winter break as the other girls leave, where it's rumored that the nuns are satanists. Meanwhile, a disturbed mental patient Joan (Emma Roberts), an escapee, is picked up by an elderly couple (James Remar and Lauren Holly) who drive her on a determined trip to the same school, where the girls must face the supernatural and demonic possession.

I just wasted 1 hour and 27 minutes of my life that I will never get back. What a load of artsy fartsy crap!! To compare this or any other horror movie for that matter to a real horror movie like the Exorcist is an absolute joke. The Exorcist had a great story and incredible acting. This was so all over the place you didn't know whether you were coming or going. I'm sick and tired of people saying movies like this are masterpieces when in fact they are nothing more than a self indulgent cinematography wank fest. I just got to watch this a bit ago, I'm still puzzling it over as to WTF is really going on. Some spoilers- 1You find out "Rose" ( Emma Roberts) is dead but doesn't really get kiiled until the end. The girl portrayed by Kiernan something or other's parents never show but it's hinted at that they mayalso be dead ( I think? It could be "Rose's" folks. That girl Kiernan says something about somebody's parents being dead & now I'm not sure whose) From there on, it's hinted that there's devil worship going on but you only get to see some 1 in the basement making off like they're praying Middle Eastern style. ( lots of bowing in a certain direction..maybe Mecca??) And a bit later on, you get to see a shadow demon that could sort of pass for the outline of an Irish Wolfhound. This movie is WAY DISJOINTED!! Not much makes sense especially where Kiernan is seen both in & outside the girl's school. You can't tell if the outdoor scenes are a flashback of if it's present tense.
