I don't believe that Daniel is any crazier than the rest of us... Yes, he has had some "episodes" in his life but he has experienced the truths of heaven and hell, which most people are blind to. He is simply on a deeper level than many individuals and unfortunately chose to listen to the people who told him he should take medication. All that did was make him worse and believe he has a problem that separates him from the world, instead of listening to the voice of God that he obviously heard at some point. It states in the bible that demons are real and residing on the earth to bring people to satan. I do not doubt that Daniel had experiences with them. The fact that he took acid does not mean that it was all imagined because demons can come for many reasons and drugs do tend to open up windows for evil. That is my opinion and I hope that Daniel will read this one day. I am a Christian and a big fan of this man's music. Damnet, that was one of the best documentaries I've personally seen. How tortured this guy is, just makes his life experiences so interesting. I always try to get people to watch it. Something about it immediately hooked me, and for that 2-3 day period I watched it about 5 times. Of course most ppl aren't going to understand-most ppl don't have serious mental illness, most ppl prefer generic twinkly shiny fairy tale musical perfection with lyrics they can sing along to & not have to put much thought into. Everyone has problems on different levels, but the fact that Daniel Johnston put so much into his art & music, self recording, self releasing, & doing so in a very punk DIY way, shows that he's more punk than punk! His music may not be typically punk, but his sincerity & DIY attitude is what is really punk! He could've easily been a destructive antisocial person, but instead channeled everything into his music & art! Average ppl don't like it, but then average ppl don't like to read between the lines as it were. I like him cuz he proves that it can be done-he doesn't need a studio with state of the art technology & effects to record, he can do it with cassette players! Screw perfection! The doc is amazing for the record. See it. I understand not getting Daniel Johnston -- generally I am not going to spend the morning listening to him. But I love and appreciate "outsider art" (for lack of a better term). People who don't necessarily have the chops, but reach for the sky anyway, and show you something you never saw. I don't get why people think he is soooo amazing. I have listened to his music, looked at his "art", watched his movie and some video, read articles....this is not a genius at work. Just because he wants to be a great as the Beatles doesn't mean he is. Some of his music is tolerable, but mostly sounds like the dribble of an upset child.
