Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simons exact physical double and his opposite - confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simons horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.

Overall this is a dull movie. I realize this movie is based on a book, and, movies based on books don't always do justice to their source material, and, those that have read the book probably have a higher appreciation of what's going on in the movie, but, as a general rule, movie goers should have to have read the book to enjoy a movie based on one. The movie should exist independent of the book if it's based on one. Regardless, I found my brain, at times, trying to get interested, but, any interesting moments in the movie would just quickly disappear. I found myself wishing the movie would hurry up and end so I could at least have the satisfaction that I watched it 'til the end. (SPOILER) I feel like if you don't have a mental illness or at least understand them you'll have a hard time getting this movie. The movie is clearly told only through the first person view of Simon James. Most mental illnesses have symptoms of depression, so whether or not he's schizophrenic or bipolar doesn't really matter here. What matters is that he has an extremely negative self image and it's become so internalized that he literallly projects his insecurities everywhere he goes. I doubt that his job was REALLY that bleak, or that his boss was REALLY that enthusiastic about work. We don't know that his mom REALLY thinks he's s disappointment and etc etc. so everything that goes on in this movie is just s projection of his mental illness. He even describes the phenomenon himself, which is the biggest hint for me that James was never real: "I don't know how to be myself. It's like I'm permanently outside myself. Like, like you could push your hands straight through me if you wanted to. And I can see the type of man I want to be versus the type of man I actually am and I know that I'm doing it but I'm incapable of what needs to be done. I'm like Pinocchio, a wooden boy.
