Wrenn Schmidt gave this movie morsels of passion and depth. Otherwise, this movie is amateur hour(and a half) all the way to the end. I think more so because it manages to raise your expectations and dashes them to the ground again and again. You know the stories where a guy chooses duty and the good of others over what he wants? Yeah, that's the story of every priest's life. It isn't fun, it isn't fair, but freely accepted, it brings new light and life to a world that stopped believing in such things and needs to be reminded of them constantly. Some people have to give up good things so that others may have them. It's a tragedy and a triumph, but not an impossibility. What makes a priest is his daily decision to walk away from opportunities for romance, which he promises once to do, at ordination, and then lives out for the rest of his life. It sucks, at an animal level. But we're not mere animals, and the life of mutual commitment is not the only life there is. A wise priest told me "I am only giving up one more woman than married men. When they marry, they chose one and had to give up all the others. I only chose one less than they did." There is an infinite difference between 1 and 0, but I have even met professors so consumed with their fields of study that they abandoned their natural desire for romance and physical intimacy. if a priest falls in love and can't walk away, he probably isn't called to be a priest. What a lot of people don't get is that many priests can and do walk away every day for their entire lives because they have found something more important to them that demands that sacrifice. The reason why Priests don't marry is so that they fully dedicate themselves and their lives to the church. That's just how things are. Catholic Priests often move around constantly and answer to a higher authority--so if they're called to move from Brooklyn to Queens, or Brooklyn to Africa, it is their obligation. My church has seen so many priests come and go because that's what they do--move around to where they are needed and then leave when their time is up. That kind of setup is not ideal for families. Also, they choose to be celibate and unmarried as Jesus once was. I used to be confused by this when I was younger, but now that I'm older I understand. It has nothing to do with being rigid or strict--men willingly enter the Priesthood knowing full well what it entails and why. They make these decisions of their own free will. So it's not a matter of "why can't Catholic priests marry?" it's more of "Damn it, this guy has just dedicated his life to the church and now he's fallen in love". When becoming a Priest or a Nun you are marrying the church. There can be no other people in your life because you are dedicating everything you are to God and charity work. Celibacy is really difficult that is why when one person decides to enter into priesthood MUST prepare his mind, heart, and soul to be sorrounded by a lot of temptations.. He must have all the courage to stand against it. Takes a lot of Prayer, faith, and perseverance to become a priest.. We humans are weak. No one is free from temptations of the Flesh..
