While I do love that song from Return of the King, I think it’s use its use here really drives home how the Hobbit films were constantly relying on the audiences nostalgia for a trilogy of far better films. Despite being canon to one another, the Hobbit as a book doesn’t feel like LotR and the films tried way too hard to make the Hobbit work as a much more direct prequel both narratively and tonally while throwing characters and imagery at you often for no other reason than to say “remember Lord of the Rings? Weren’t those movies good? This is the same universe so these movies are good too.” I just wish the studio would’ve let LotR stand on its own and gone ahead and let the Hobbit be it’s own lighthearted quirky thing. Still canon, but unique in tone and style. But I understand the choice and the films aren’t terrible, just not as good as they could’ve been. - @Wednesday, June 13, 2018 8:19 AM
