I've seen this film, and apart from the shaky camera shots. It was an overall great film to watch. I don't know maybe the bad shaky camera shots were an effect they were trying to create towards the audience, a new thing in film if you will? I don't remember the book being funny, but I've always had trouble appreciating Roth as a funny writer, at least not this kind of funny, especially his final novels. Movies like "American Stain" and "Dying Animal" achieved a tone much closer to the books as I read them. Good for Pacino! Most actors of his stature, because of their rather large egos, would stay away from playing an aging has-been! For example, look at Bruce Willis; he's in his 60's and he's still trying to save the world instead of taking the kinds of risks he used to in indie movies like Pulp Fiction.
