7.8 / 10

1327. After a mysterious death in a Benedictine Abbey, the monks are convinced that the apocalypse is coming. With the Abbey to play host to a council on the Franciscan's Order's belief that the Church should rid itself of wealth, William of Baskerville, a respected Franciscan friar, is asked to assist in determining the cause of the untimely death. Alas, more deaths occur as the investigation draws closer to uncovering the secret the Abbey wants hidden, and there is finally no stopping the Holy Inquisition from taking an active hand in the process. William and his young novice must race against time to prove the innocence of the unjustly accused and avoid the wrath of Holy Inquisitor Bernardo Gui.

A book was stolen or lost will it ever been found?  They had to reconstitute it. - @Friday, November 23, 2018 9:35 PM

This movie must have the ugliest cast of characters ever assembled for a movie! The only "non uglies" being the two main characters, Sean Connery and Christian Slater! - @Tuesday, November 6, 2018 4:08 AM

The trailer could have kept things a bit more close to the vest, but it isn't true that it gives the movie away. Umberto Eco's book was a jewel, because he used a mystery as an excuse to have a philosophical discussion about reason and faith, at a time in which faith remained the main vehicle to understand life. Even if the trailer outright gave away the killer and his method, which it didn't, it would still be worthwhile to watch, since you would want to see Sean Connery playing a religious version of Sherlock Holmes, to learn the real motive behind the crime, and its implications for a time in which people still weren´t ready to use reason as our main tool to understand the world. - @Friday, July 13, 2018 4:19 PM

Great book and great movie. But I recommed at first to read a book, because as always, there are many scenes, that weren't shown in film. - @Saturday, February 17, 2018 4:51 PM

I was curious when I heard about the movie, because I thought it would take at least 10 hours to make the book fit in an acceptable way. But didn't expect the movie to miss the point entirely, to be that shallow, and to miss so many opportunities to develop the characters and the plot. To those who read it, never watch it. - @Sunday, September 10, 2017 4:25 AM

The movie's much better than this petty "trailer" and the BOOK's much, MUCH better than the movie. PS. Besides the fact that they remade the charachters completely in the movie - for example - it's not any "crime solving mystery", but a clash of philosophies and views upon how the world should be run that the book presents or the fact that nor Bernard Gui neither Jorge from Burgos are "men of Faith" - they are ALL Men of Faith (even Wilhelm from Baskerville), it's just they interpret it each one in another way. Gui is a man of power - a Dominican that (quote): "is not interested in finding the responsible, just burn at the stake the accused" - he gets "kicks" from power over life and death. Jorge is the TRUE "Medieval man" - he believes God shouldn't be "explained" - just believed - period. Baskerville instead thinks just like Bacon - for him the universe is the key unlock the "mysteries of the universe", that Jorge doesn't want to unlock at ALL COSTS - EVEN IF IT MEANS MURDERING HIS BROTHERS. The "game" they play is portrayed in the movie as some CRAPPY "Sherlock Holmes-style" mystery, while in fact there's much more at stake. That "much more" takes a lot from the "dispute" (in fact a TRIAL) between St. Bernard and Abelard. PS....which (by the way) was WON BY St. BERNARD of CLAIRVAUX - since "Faith always wins over Reason"... - @Tuesday, April 5, 2016 2:16 AM
