6.4 / 10

Charles Dexter Ward's wife enlists the help of a private detective to find out what her husband is up to in a remote cabin owned by his family for centuries. The husband is a chemical engineer, and the smells from his experiments (and the delivery of what appear to be human remains at all hours) are beginning to arouse the attention of neighbors and local law enforcement officials. When the detective and wife find a diary of the husband's ancestor from 1771, and reports of gruesome murders in the area begin to surface, they begin to suspect that some very unnatural experiments are being conducted in the old house. Based on an H.P. Lovecraft story.

I like this movie, say it again recently. I like when trailers were like this, with the voice over. Horror movies were introduced on tv like this when I was growing up. - @Tuesday, June 14, 2016 12:32 PM

Back in the 80s VHS movies were really expensive. I remember I had a catalog which had Predator for 69.99. Heck, my brother paid 800 dollars for a VCR player. - @Tuesday, July 7, 2015 3:02 AM

Hello everybody! I am looking for a old horror movie . The movie began with two old people in a caravan watching TV, one of them hears something outside he goes to the door and some creature i think takes him away, and all they show is a green hand draging him out. There was also another scene, I think, when a guy is in a closet hiding and through an opening in the floor many creatures enter the room and he is just sitting there still so that they do not see him. I hope this helps you. Thanks. - @Wednesday, April 8, 2015 8:51 AM

Ain't watched the movie in like seventeen years!  Woot!  Gonna introduce my hubby to it tonight!  Anything with Chris Sarandon in it is worth the watch!  Yeah, that price is a tad  ridiculous by far.  Even back in the day I never paid that much for a dang VHS; twenty something at the max!  Now I go to Goodwill and get them for like less than a buck!  Okay, gonna go enjoy this flick again for the first time in ever!  Thanks for posting!  WOOT WOOT!!  - @Friday, January 2, 2015 1:03 AM

Nope... when VHS first came out it was close to a 100 bucks to buy many of them. That was before the VHS boom happened, and pretty much only rich early-adapters had home video players. It was cutting edge technology for a few years there, and the idea that you could own a movie and play it any time was a BIG deal. Even shitty movies would cost like $50. - @Tuesday, October 29, 2013 1:58 PM

I'm guessing that retail price must be for a rental license. In other words, that somewhat insane price is not for consumers, it's for video stores because it costs more to buy a license to rent a copy out multiple times than for a license to show a movie at home. - @Thursday, October 24, 2013 11:48 AM

This film is a frickin classic, one of the best to come out of the mythos in my opinion. Ranks up there with From Beyond - @Monday, October 7, 2013 7:57 PM

Yeah, VHS movies back in the 80's and early 90's were very expensive. This movie is more of a modern adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's work. Similar to the movie Re-animator or From Beyond. Still a good movie none the less. - @Wednesday, September 4, 2013 7:01 PM

finally i was able to ad this dvd to my horror collection. it wasn't cheap though (36 euro=about 45 dollar). but as a collector it was worth it, cause it very hard to find especially in europe. - @Thursday, November 15, 2012 3:07 PM

Great and very underrated low budget film. Chris Sarandon is superb in this. His performance of Joseph Curwen is really CREEPY! I told him this in person when I met him at a Spooky Empire convention. He was surprised that I mentioned the film over Fright Night. It is available on DVD and Netflix. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It may be low budget, but it's a better horror film than what is out today! - @Thursday, September 20, 2012 7:10 PM

VHS is probably the way to go on this one (apparently the dvd is poorly presented somehow). The film is on netflix instant view right now and it's awesome. - @Monday, March 19, 2012 5:23 AM

$89.98 seems pretty cheap for a vhs, considering the only new dvd copy on amazon costs £101.95. Would love to get my hungry little mits on a copy. Selling a kidney might do it... - @Monday, March 12, 2012 5:08 PM

This movie has some good SFX. The look of the abominations (which is probably the best term to describe the undead in this film) are awesome. However, the movie might be considered "slow" by some peoples standards. I thought it had an interesting vibe about it, an adventurous detective trying to explore strange happenings kind of story. Just don't expect tons of action... - @Sunday, October 3, 2010 5:10 PM
