The experiment wasn’t really designed to test the effects of prison on behaviour but rather to what degree situational factors and roles influence attitudes, perspectives and in turn, behaviour. It’s very famous for highlighting the fact that our disposition (enduring traits) can be outweighed by the situation, in this case the possession of authority. The fact that behaviour can be attributed to one or both of these is called the ATTRIBUTION THEORY. They planned to focus on the prisoners’ reactions more so, but it turned out that the guards acted much more inordinately, exposing psychological truths, as this trailer shows.
