Action Adventure Western

6.2 / 10

Tormented by incessant and recurring nightmares of a hellish great white buffalo attacking him in the snow-clad wilderness, the ailing Wild Bill Hickok, decides to travel north to hunt down the raging mythical beast. Along the way, the experienced hunter will team up with an old friend, the one-eyed Charlie, while in the meantime, the Indian Chief Crazy Horse whose child was killed by the same creature, is already out in the unforgiving landscape, pursuing the extraordinary bison. Without a doubt, both men won't rest until they find the supernatural monster of legend, however, in this uncomfortable alliance, even the slightest mistake can prove deadly.

I'm wondering what caused the buffalo to go mad; was it rabies or brain worms. - @Thursday, October 15, 2015 8:13 PM

Yeah, I don' know what happened to the trailer that made it so pixelated when it was uploaded. Hate that grainy distorted look but I no longer have the original file and can't fix it. - @Tuesday, February 26, 2013 4:36 PM

I saw this movie when i was a kid and ever since then this movie scares me and I'm 25 the sound the buffalo makes the way it runs down a long open woods area getting closer and closer as Charles bronson is looking far in the distance straight ahead - @Thursday, August 16, 2012 7:29 AM

This movie STILL holds an odd fascination for me. If memory serves me, the white buffalo itself was created by Carlo Rambaldi, the effects designer who made E.T. The buffalo actually IS that large, a giant animatronic. Very impressive, even to this day. And because it REALLY is that large, it adds a certain realness to the scenes it's in, more so than when you use computer animation. - @Monday, June 4, 2012 9:53 PM

Yes, that is the late Will Sampson who starred in so many films that included "Orca" - @Sunday, May 20, 2012 10:02 PM

It's a combination of gun fire from Wild Bill Hickcok and Crazy Horse stabbing the buffalo while riding it's back. Crazy Horse says in the movie that the bull had to be taken in the old way. You may be able to catch it if you have Encore movie channel. They have been running it a lot lately on Encore Western - @Thursday, April 26, 2012 11:01 PM

I saw a clip of this on TV many years ago, I turned on the channel and there was this giant roaring white bovine. I thought it was Auðumbla the primeval cow from Norse mythology. I figured the movie was going to be about the vikings. - @Wednesday, February 8, 2012 7:46 PM

ye gods... it's REAL!! I saw this in a drive-in w/ my parents in about 1977, or 78, but I was only 6 or so, and I had begun to think it must have been a false memory because the premise is just so odd, and it was such a long time ago. Don't know what made me google it tonight, but wow! I'm going to have to see it again :) - @Saturday, October 29, 2011 6:42 AM

@ShellTrek People often do not give "The White Buffalo" enough credit. Yes, it is about much more than just a rampaging buffalo. Thanks for posting, ShellTrek! - @Saturday, June 18, 2011 9:59 PM

It's been over 40 years now & I've seen this movie at 4 times already, but have only just realized the meaning of it... It's about redemption. Two ill-regot enemy heroes; from History, that get together for a common quest! "How did I miss that" D'OH!! - @Saturday, June 18, 2011 12:12 PM

Along with From Noon Till Three, one of Bronson's best, because both these Westerns are offbeat, not easy to categorize, and stand outside of Bronson's standard M.O. of predictable fare. Supernatural, otherworldly though it's two protagonists were very real people in the real world. The buffalo symbolizes a demon, but the demon is within these two men themselves, so the depiction of the buffalo shouldn't be taken literally--it's a fictional story and no more, Clint Walker as a bad guy is good too. - @Thursday, November 4, 2010 6:25 PM

James Nolan
@Pimblit Graham Greene played a supporting role in Die Hard With A Vengeance as a cop named Joe Lambert. I don't recall any references to his origins in the film (but some verification if they did is appreciated--I'm not above having my gaffes corrected). I liked the film, but I'm not sure if a Die Hard movie is the best exemplar for a Native American portraying a non-Native American or non-specific-in-origin role. - @Thursday, November 4, 2010 6:10 PM

@lefty5128 I have to admit that I never noticed the wheels and tracks that operated the buffalo. Many people, including you, have mentioned that but I failed to notice it. Thanks for the comment, lefty! - @Thursday, June 3, 2010 12:56 AM

@evilrotten Me too, it is one of my favs........I am a huge Charles Bronson fan and collect as many of his movies that I can on DVD..but so many are not available. I remember that this movie had the great big indian from One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest in it. You can't even gind this movie in video stores anymore as they have all gotten rid of VHS and it has not been released on DVD. One of Bronson's stranger movies...BUT one of his best as far as I am concerned. - @Wednesday, February 17, 2010 7:03 AM

Thank you, madamdragon! I really appreciate it when someone takes the time to let me know if they enjoyed something I did. I also am a big fan of this movie. I also enjoyed everyone's performances in "The White Buffalo". And I agree that Will Sampson's performance, and his victory cry, are a very big part of this movie. - @Sunday, August 31, 2008 3:03 AM

Despite it's flaws there's just something about this movie that grabs me, the surreal look the soundstage gives the to the nightmares and buffalo scenes and the final show down is effective.Barry's scoring never fails, Bronson, Warden, Sampson, always terrific.Mustn't forget Kim Novak,Lauter and Walker. Entertaining all around. - @Thursday, August 14, 2008 5:56 PM

The only version I can find on DVD is one that is copied from a VHS. I have yet to find this Wide screen. - @Sunday, June 8, 2008 7:57 AM
