The following is an email that I sent today to an adoption rights advocate. Since I do not have his permission to have his name revealed, I have edited out his name? Thank you for your email. I hope that you have found, and that you are spending Thanksgiving with your adoptive and birth kin. A cousin texted me earlier today, but, other than that, I am spending Thanksgiving with my peers and caregivers here at Spring Valley Rest Home. I hope that I am not being overoptimistic, but I think that there is a good chance that I will soon find a New York state Senator and a New York state Assemblyman to introduce your bill, perhaps with an amendment. When Governor Cuomo vetoed Assemblyman Weprin's OBC. bill, he objected to what he called "a cumbersome process" that the bill would require. Though my heart feels that minors should be included in the legislation, using intermediaries when the petitioning or sought after sibling is a minor, would impose many duties of the courts, and that might result in the legislation not becoming law. I was an only child and there were no adoptions into or out of my family. I have no sibling to be reunited with. So I definitely feel that brothers and sisters should be allowed to know each other and play together when they are children. After all, what are brothers and sisters for? The following is the text of an email that I sent to New York state Senator Montgomery: Dear Senator Montgomery, Please consider introducing the attached adoption rights sibling reunification bill which was drafted by adoption rights activist Bert Hirsch. Enactment of this idea would reduce human suffering. More often than we would like to think, brothers and sisters have been separated by adoption and never allowed to see each other again. Even many twins and triplets were separated. The emotional harm that being separated from ones brothers and sisters cannot be imagined. Enactment of the attached proposal will help turn the pains and tears of separation into the the hugs and joys of reunion. While the LaValle/Zebrowski bill is a good bill,, this proposal is much better. I have been advocating for sibling reunification legislation for many years. The first New York state bill to open records to biological siblings was introduced at my suggestion in 1981. I suggested sibling reunification legislation after I was moved by reading news reports of the reunion of a set of separately adopted identical-triplets in September, 1980. I am now 67 years old, and my health is declining. I would very much like to complete this project before I die. Thanking you in advance. I don't understand if they did anything medical, like get study by a psychologist, than why can't they sue the people holding the records for their medical records. By law you can't with hold those and if they were minors when they turn 18 they can revoke permission for them to use the findings. Dear Assemblymembers Zebrowski and Jaffee: The following is the text of an email that I sent today to New York state legislators: May I suggest that there be two sibling reunification bills, and that one of the bills be along the lines of the bill that was suggested and drafted by Bert Hirsch. Mr Hirsch is an attorney and an adoption rights activist. If Mr. HIrsch's bill were changed to exclude minors, it would impose considerably less duties on the courts than Assemblyman Zebrowski's bill would. The imposition of many more duties on the courts was a major objection to Assemblyman Zebrowski's bill. Advoating for the right separated brothers and sisters to reunite became my cause after I read of the reunion of a set of identical-triplets in September, 1980. The first New York state bill to open records directly to biological siblings was introduced at my suggestion in 1981. When the triplets met, they told reporters, "We love each other." What better reason could there be for changing the laws? Please make it as easy as possible for siblings to reunite. Thanking you in advance. We only read the happy stories about siblings who find each other. We don't hare about those brothers and sisters who cry themselves to sleep because they are denied each other by the sealed records laws. There is a need for new laws to allow adoptees the right to identifying information re. their natural brothers and sisters. Because of the triplets, bills to make it easier for separately adopted siblings to become reunited have been introduced in the New York state legislature. Though the bills have yet to pass, I am doing all that I can to persuade the New York state legislature to pass the current bill as I did for the previous bills. These bills were introduced at my suggestion after I read about the triplet's finding each other in 1980. The first bill,, which was nicknamed the Triplet Bill, was introduced in 1981 by New York state Assemblyman Thomas Morahan. The current bill is introduced by New York state Senator Kenneth LaValle and New York state Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski.
