In 1926 the tragic and untimely death of a silent screen actor caused female moviegoers to riot in the streets and in some cases to commit suicide - that actor was Rudolph Valentino. Ballroom dancer Valentino manipulated his good looks and animal-like grace into a Hollywood career. His smouldering love making, tinged with a touch of masterful cruelty, expressed a sexuality which was at once both shocking and sensual.

for goodness sake....the late great Rudolph Valentino himself challenged whoever called him gay. there are a lot of people who wish he was gay. watch one of his documentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIFyB9dsbac) and you'll hear first-hand from famous journalist during the 20s, Adela Rogers St. John, that Valentino told her himself that he is not gay. and, Valentino was a true gentlemen, NOT the ridiculously lustful character depicted here. the actor does not do the handsome Rudolph Valentino any justices! - @Thursday, September 20, 2018 4:26 AM

i loved this film! Exciting sexy, dramatic, sumptuous. I had no idea about Valentino's actual life, I was young, I LOVED Nureyev. I imagine I'd be more critical now so regrettably I think I probably ought never see it again just in case I see the flaws I didn't see then. - @Monday, December 26, 2016 6:15 PM

Just saw this on TCM. As a huge fan of Nureyev and Valentino as well as Nijinksy I found it fascinating. - @Sunday, June 28, 2015 12:26 AM

I adore Ken Russel and I really love this film. One thing I see in it that I have never heard talked about is that the performances are directed to be very like silent film performances, but because it is a sound film they seem very strident and over the top. For me it works beautifully and captures in a talkie some of what I love about silents. Ken Russel, it seems to me, embodies true artistic passion. Some of his films simply do not work, and when he fails he does so gloriously, but in some strange way he needed the freedom to fail in order to create his numerous true masterpieces. Russell was an absolutely fearless artist who was not afraid to cross any line or boundary to realize his vision, and for the record Russell's The Devils is my favorite film of all time. :) - @Friday, June 26, 2015 3:58 AM

Nice to hear my voice on the title song, trying to sound like vernon dalhart whose version couldn't be used because of copyright rules. The film is on dvd now, don't worry, I don't get royalties! - @Sunday, May 31, 2015 8:42 PM

I honestly enjoy this film a lot. Yes, it's flawed and slow, and yet despite that, I have seen it multiple times and still like it. It's a breathtaking production, the acting amuses me, and it's just so LUSH and HUGE. - @Monday, June 30, 2014 8:42 PM

I just bought an old book called The Nureyev Valentino, which is about the making of Ken Russell's Valentino. I want to see this film. - @Saturday, April 13, 2013 2:59 PM

Ken Russell was one of the great directors who rightfully deserves to called "visionary". Even when the film is crushed underneath the excesses it is still entertaining and never dull. I was deeply saddened by his death. Ken Russell was never a director who liked playing safe with his films or the content. - @Saturday, July 14, 2012 6:03 AM
