Genres & Description

Drama

6.2 / 10

The British Empire flowers; exotic India colors English imaginations. Becky Sharp, the orphaned daughter of a painter and a singer, leaves a home for girls to be a governess, armed with a keen wit, good looks, fluent French, and an eye for social advancement. Society tries its best to keep her from climbing. An episodic narrative follows her for 20 years, through marriage, Napoleonic wars, a child, loyalty to a school friend, the vicissitudes of the family whose daughters she instructed, and attention from a bored marquess who collected her father's paintings. Honesty tempers her schemes.

What gets me most is the whole story was about Amelia, Becky was quite secondary in the original writing. Becky was a depicted as horrible, it would be ok if they called this movie something else based loosely, and very loosely, on what the character of Becky Sharp. She was a true witch, slut and VAIN (point of the novel) character. - @Thursday, October 4, 2012 2:12 AM

Read the book as well, a hard read but an enjoyable story. This movie is far from the book, the book did not paint Rebecca as even slightly, or even close to remotely a kind person, she was even what we call these days a sociopath. It would have been nice to see the character of Becky Sharp portrayed as she was in the novel, even if they had to change the story somewhat (and they did) for cinematic entertainment. - @Thursday, October 4, 2012 1:45 AM
