Horror Thriller

4.7 / 10

One Morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire - 572 people - walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness. They left behind their clothes, their money, all of their essentials. Even their dogs were abandoned, tied to posts and left to starve. No One knows why. A search party dispatched by the U.S. Army eventually discovered the remains of nearly 300 of Friar's evacuees. Many had frozen to death. Others were cruelly and mysteriously slaughtered. The bodies of the remaining citizens are still unaccounted for. Over the years, a quiet cover-up operation managed to weave the story of Friar into the stuff of legends and backwoods fairy tales. The town has slowly repopulated, but the vast wilderness is mostly untracked, with the northern-most stretches off limits to local hunters and loggers. In 2008, the coordinates for the "YELLOWBRICKROAD" trail head were declassified. The first official expedition into a dark and twisted wilderness ...

I loved everything except the ending. It kept me on edge, and it was a psychological thriller. It is meant to mess with your mind and I believe it accomplished that The ending was confusing and sort of anticlimactic. - @Thursday, January 4, 2018 2:19 AM

I'm surprised to see so many positive comments here, I only came to warn others of this movie's shittyness. To me, It's dull, it's boring, nothing makes any sense and it seems to drag on forever, especially for a movie so short. Now that I've seen how many people like the movie I kind of recommend you watch it to see if it's any good for yourself but if you start to get bored ten minutes in, turn it off. - @Monday, February 29, 2016 6:38 PM

Heroin Holiday
Smoked a big joint before watching and after about 45 mins in the noises and constant 30's music became legitimately unsettling. Extremely well done, genuinely creepy, perfectly surreal and very lovecraftian.Exactly what I look for in the psychological horror genre. Definitely became an instant favorite for me, at least when it comes to horror flicks released over the past 10 years. - @Wednesday, July 8, 2015 3:22 AM

(NO SPOILERS, JUST COMMENTARY HERE) I really liked this movie.  It's not your typical mainstream horror flick, so if that's your thing, you probably won't like this.  Or hell, maybe you will.  This movie is very strange, and quite unique.  It has some cheese, but in all honesty, what movie doesn't?  This is a fun and creepy escape from reality.  Watch it. - @Saturday, January 10, 2015 5:17 AM

I think it was a good movie. They all reached the end of the yellow brick road... because nothing good happened down that road, the further you go on it, the more you forget where you come from until you lose it all, that's pretty good analogy with real life where that yellow brick road is conformist mind control, you go around losing your self. "just follow the yellow brick road", no creativity... Be a good sheep. - @Monday, September 23, 2013 3:53 PM

from what i understood of it was they went to follow the yellow brick road or at least the path that was once the yellow brick road and on the yellow brick road the singing that it kept referring to was pretty much the munchkin song from the wizard of oz and the song and the trip affected each of them in a different way like caused one to go on a killing spree made the chick fall in love with every guy the other to do hallucinagens and so forth i think it was a really good movie - @Friday, June 14, 2013 8:12 AM

I know Blair Witch got a lot of criticism, but for me that was a brilliant shift in film...the super-realism. From there you started getting things like Cloverfield and Paranormal that use the home movie style, then more things like this where the story is presented from the POV of a participant really...we as the audience might be witness to things but we aren't privy to special explanations or background info. Texas Chainsaw (original) did that. - @Sunday, March 3, 2013 2:05 AM

rustyoneone
excellent point. one assumes that the entire audience knows this. but more often they seem content to watch them like gladiators in a Colosseum than ask themselves how THEY might respond in such a situation and let themselves kinda harmonize with the characters. - @Sunday, March 3, 2013 1:53 AM

p.s. and the logical ending would have been to have the dude be the sole survivor like with the first incident. but i would have been pretty disappointed with that - @Sunday, March 3, 2013 1:49 AM

i think someone who looked for a satisfying ending to horror movies like this (i'd like to call them "disruptors" because they're not so much scary but disturbing) may be looking in the wrong place. i don't know, i haven't been "frightened" by any horror movie in a LOOONG time. i actually got tired of being disappointed and gave up on the whole lot. this maybe the fifth one i've watched in the last couple days and i thought the ending was fucking great. - @Sunday, March 3, 2013 1:47 AM

basically all that happens is that they here some high pitched sound, get lost and then go mad and kill each other ..then the guy finds yellow brock rd which either exists or doesnt..you have to kinda decide for your self then he sees his dead freinds screams and thats it...fucked up idea but a nice pile of shit - @Tuesday, February 5, 2013 1:20 PM

Look, I don't mean to be rude and I'm not even the smartest person. I probably can't even back up my own point... But this movie..had been done. The creepy paths in the forest, the mysterious disappearances, etc etc..Idk to me, it's not that original. But like you said, it's poorly executed..:/ - @Thursday, January 24, 2013 8:54 PM

Nicely worded. I just finished it and I am still not even sure I enjoyed it... no pretty sure I didn't enjoy it but somehow it kept me watching. I think what it lacked was initial character development. They could have cut some of the wandering the forest scene and spent that with character development at the beginning so when it all starts falling apart we can stay with them. Much better in concept than execution. Watching with the commentary now. - @Sunday, December 16, 2012 3:35 AM

I prize originality in horror, and this movie got points for coming from a place of originality. The concept is actually pretty excellent. Trouble was, when you have an interesting, creepy concept, you have to have something to show for it. You have to be able to lay all the cards on the table in the end in a satisfying way, otherwise the story amounts to nothing more than a half-formed idea. And that's exactly what Yellowbrickroad was. - @Monday, December 3, 2012 1:15 PM

It seems like the road was not only alive in some sort of way, but it was an inescapable trap. Even with GPS there was no way back home again, they just kept walking to their death/doom. - @Sunday, November 25, 2012 11:29 PM
