Action Drama Mystery Sci-Fi Thriller

6.6 / 10

A city is ravaged by an epidemic of instant "white blindness". Those first afflicted are quarantined by the authorities in an abandoned mental hospital where the newly created "society of the blind" quickly breaks down. Criminals and the physically powerful prey upon the weak, hoarding the meager food rations and committing horrific acts. There is, however, one eyewitness to the nightmare. A woman whose sight is unaffected by the plague follows her afflicted husband to quarantine. There, keeping her sight a secret, she guides seven strangers who have become, in essence, a family. She leads them out of quarantine and onto the ravaged streets of the city, which has seen all vestiges of civilization crumble.

I love this movie. Jep it has perverse violent scenes but thats the idea people are getting crazy in that world in all things. Human would change everything in this Situation an that is the point of the movie nothing else. - @Saturday, December 19, 2015 1:09 AM

I just could bear watching the first half of the movie. Nonsense dialogs, absurd situations, illogical reactions, stupid characters, boring pace ... I guess the essay of José Saramago its worth to read it but even without having read it I can tell you that's a very mediocre film. - @Friday, December 19, 2014 1:09 AM

i think to understand this story you have to undurtand it is based on a portuguese common frase "O maior cego é aquele que não quer ver..." or in english "the worst blind is the one that doesnt want to see", the women is the only one that wants to see all the others refuse to see their lifes - @Friday, August 10, 2012 7:40 PM

@nckjoswifey114 It's a matter of perception, The zero subject maybe was afraid of how his life would be if he gone blind, in the book we don't see that but along the book the wife was very brave for her husband and the others. So she wasn't afraid from the illness, she couldn't. - @Friday, November 4, 2011 10:58 PM

@kyuubizone umm but i started the book and the first guy that was infected didn't knew it was an illness, so he wasn't afraid of it before, explain that to me please. - @Wednesday, September 21, 2011 4:43 AM

She is not immune, she wasn't afraid by the blindness. That's how she didn't get infected. - @Saturday, April 16, 2011 1:50 AM

@yossuelzero No te exhibas tan penosamente.

- @Saturday, March 14, 2009 9:32 PM

The only similarity between the two stories is that they involve a whole lot of blind people but Saramago was trying to make a point. He juxtaposed existentialism and postmodern views to convey the rotten condition of society. Day of the Triffids, however, is sci-fi pulp. No offense. - @Wednesday, January 7, 2009 11:15 PM
