The lonely teenager Brendan finds his former girlfriend Emily dead in the entrance of a tunnel of sewage and recalls her phone call two days ago, when she said to him that she was in trouble. Brendan, who still loved Emily, met bad elements of his high-school trying to contact her, and when he succeeded, she told him that she was OK. He hides her body in the tunnel and decides to investigate the meaning and connection of four words, including "brick" and "pin", that Emily told him to find who killed her. Using the support of his nerd friend Brain, he successively meets the small time drug dealers Kara, Dode, Brad Bramish, Laura and Tugger, to reach the teenager powerful drug dealer The Pin. Slowly, Brendan unravels the motives why Emily was killed and plots a revenge.

Sad to say it, but I'm one of the people who just can't get behind this movie. The whole story and the fact it takes place during high school is just kind of sad to me and it also just feels like it tries to be too smart with its dialogue like "sniffing for me like a vampire bat for a horse with a nick on its ear he can suck on," which just sounds really dumb to me. the only thing with this movie is that it's set in highschool (idk it's kinda weird, highschoolers don't have that much influence and access, most of the chatacters don't act like teenagers, a little too mature and unfit for their age because of the noire genre) but once you get past that the movie is hella fine. It's boring unless you use your brain and immerse yourself in figuring out the characters' story. Pacing is ok. Camera angle is beautiful. Nice twist. Perfect dark atmosphere with well-built tension. The intrigue is set up in the beginning and therein the dialogue moves fast with lots of twists. I really enjoyed this film Joseph Gordon- Levitt was just off the charts brilliant with his role I totally love where he went wit his character and ultimately stole the spot light. Rain Johnson the director did a incredible job directing the actors and actresses in the fact these kids were high school students and they were going in the direction of being like well adults dealing with adult situations. This film had a Shakespeare vide to it that was beautifully well executed by Rain Johnson and the entire cast u can tell every1 really cared and enjoyed being in and apart of this film of sheer brilliance. I don't get all the haters of this film. It won awards for originality in storytelling at several festivals and its still talked about today.
