Early twenty-something Baltimoreans Eddie, Shrevie, Boogie, Billy, Fenwick and Modell have been friends since they were kids, where the center of their lives has been and still is the Fells Point Diner. It's the last week of 1959. Baltimore Colts fanatic Eddie is scheduled to get married to Elyse on New Year's Eve, but may call off the wedding if Elyse doesn't pass his Colts quiz which he will hold two days before the scheduled wedding. Inexperienced Eddie turns to the only other married one among the bunch, electronics salesman and music aficionado Shrevie, for advice, he who may not be the best person from who to ask advice on marriage since he doesn't yet realize that he probably got married to his wife Beth for the wrong reasons. Indeed, Beth, who has lost her sense of identity, is unhappy in their marriage, and contemplates having an affair with someone who provides what she believes is a sympathetic shoulder. Hairdresser and law school student Boogie is the player of the bunch, ...

I saw this movie yesterday, for the first time. It's very well-made, the cast is great, the nostalgic atmosphere, the music, the rhythm of the dialogues, really good. But I have a problem with the story and the characters. Was I expecting too much? All these guys are complete idiots and their lives are so meaningless that you could drop a bomb on that diner and nobody would miss them. I couldn't really identify or feel any empathy because they're all too stupid, too empty. (Except that guy whose girlfriend is pregnant and he wants to be included in her and kid's life - is that Billy? - anyway, that situation has some kind of meaning, it has past, future, some drama and consequences.) All the rest - the "dick-in-the-popcorn" creep, the destructive idiot in the manger, the records-in-the-alphabetical-order anal freak, the sports-quiz-before-marriage lazy mama's boy asshole? I guess they're supposed to be funny, but they're not. The characters of any decent sitcom have more depth and sense of purpose and the jokes are way better. Is this a "guy's movie"? It was embarrassing to watch. Guys from my high school had more brains, more soul and more sense of humour than these morons (and I mean while we were in high school). - @Wednesday, December 28, 2016 5:30 PM

I just had to pick my ass off the floor from laughing it off--at the idea of someone being "a little more developed than the other characters, because he's married." He's certainly the most regretful and deluded among them--and glorying more in his past because his life is now shit. Yeah, I guess if that qualifies as "developed", most married people I've known fit the bill. - @Saturday, April 6, 2013 1:40 AM

I love this film, especially those futile conversations in the Diner (Did Tarantino learn from this for his Pulp fiction conversations?) We (men) have all been there as young men. - @Wednesday, November 30, 2011 11:38 AM

@ssm3141 Thank you. Our friend's name was John Petrillo. He was killed on Feb. 6, 1968 during the infamous Tet Offensive in Vietnam exactly 4 months after his 19th birthday. In an eerie bit of coincidence the random 4-digit number on his headstone at Long Island National Cemetery is 2668, which mirrors the day of his death---2/6/68. I visit the grave 2 or 3 times each year. I recall a deep conversation we once had at age 16 about plans for the future. Didn't know he had just 3 years left. - @Wednesday, June 9, 2010 2:27 AM

@ssm3141 True and a few years ago myself and some of the guys I grew up with started meeting for dinner once a year and it's always a great time. We were kids together back in the 1950s and 60's growing up on Long Island. Now we're all in our early sixties and all the memories come flooding back. Oddly enough, what brought us back together was an internet post about an old friend who died in Vietnam. He brought us all together again. It's never too late to hook up with old friends. - @Tuesday, June 8, 2010 8:44 AM
