Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) is a retired widow, living in a small apartment. She spends most of her time watching TV, especially a particular self-help show. She has delusions of rising above her current dull existence by being a guest on that show. Her son, Harry (Jared Leto) is a junkie but along with his friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) has visions of making it big by becoming a drug dealer. Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) could be fashion designer or artist but is swept along in Harry's drug-centric world. Meanwhile Sara has developed an addiction of her own. She desperately wants to lose weight and so goes on a crash course involving popping pills, pills which turn out to be very addictive and harmful to her mental state.

Tyrones story was the saddest to me. Marian was just a spoiled brat who could have had a better life if it wasn't for her attitude, tyrone probably grew up broke and probably lost his mother somehow and ended up on the streets cuz he had no father or siblings. Ended up going to jail because he tried to help his friend get better in the hospital too, he could have dropped him off and left but he stayed. The old woman was just delusional everything she did she did to herself for no damn reason i mean really who takes speed to lose weight? Only movie that made me feel a despair unlike anything else. I keep trying so hard to rematch it and appreciate it again. But, it has almost no "redeeming" qualities. (Because Aronofsky did such an amazing job at story telling, so much so that it is almost impossible to rematch) I think it was the 21st movie to have @ 2000 cut/edits. This movie made me feel severely depressed. I cried for days to be honest and it stuck with me. I saw it on the Lifetime channel, by myself when I was 17 and alone in my parents house around midnight after everyone else was asleep. After finishing the movie, I cried for probably an hour straight. The movie is VERY powerful so be cautious. I honestly felt a little suicidal after watching it and I know that sounds ridiculous, like who feels suicidal after watching stupid movie but if I'm being completely honest, the movie fucked me up to the point where I started reflecting on my on life and it got me thinking about things I shouldn't have. After all that being said though, I highly recommended you watch it. Lol A movie of this magnitude needed to be that emotionally powerful in order to get it's message across. I honestly thought they were shooting up methamphetamine at first, not heroin. Heroin is a opiate pain killer derived from morphine, it makes you feel really warm, comfortable and chilled out and just euphoric and content with everything, not all twacked out of your mind. But opiates will destroy your life. Some people can handle their addictions better than others (kind of like me), but either way, its a tough road you don't want to go down. I'm an opiate addict and seeking treatment, I just got put on suboxone yesterday and started counseling. I'm not just doing it for myself, but for my daughter. I've been an opiate addict for 4 years and I'm proud that I've finally got help. I knew the dangers and the risks but I didn't care because of my severe depression and anxiety. I was never really chasing the high, I just wanted to feel better so I self medicated and now I'm in a worse place. Please, if you ever feel tempted to use to fix a problem, it will hurt you the long run! Its commen sense not to go down the path I did But I didn't care and now I'm paying for it.
