Genres & Description

Action Fantasy Film-Noir Horror Mystery Romance

7.4 / 10

A brother and sister move into an old seaside house they find abandoned for many years on the English coast. Their original enchantment with the house diminishes as they hear stories of the previous owners and meet their daughter (now a young woman) who now lives as a neighbor with her grandfather. Also heard are unexplained sounds during the night. It becomes obvious that the house is haunted. The reasons for the haunting and how they relate to the daughter whom the brother is falling in love with, prove to be a complex mystery. As they are compelled to solve it, the supernatural activity at the house increases to a frightening level.

I have always loved Raymond Milland's movies. Too bad he was an absolute JERK. - @Thursday, October 25, 2018 7:31 PM

Failed to note that this was perhaps the first Hollywood film in which the ghosts are real - not some criminal element trying to scare people away from a bootlegging den or something.  Scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and is still good film years later - @Sunday, November 19, 2017 10:25 PM

Ray Milland made The Lost Weekend after The Univited, he hadn't "just won the Oscar" before making The Uninvited. - @Sunday, October 22, 2017 1:57 AM

I think The Thing With Two Heads was pretty damn memorable. - @Wednesday, June 14, 2017 7:19 PM

Producer Charles Brackett's (better known as Billy Wilder's writing partner during their Paramount years) published diary has some great behind the scenes tidbits about the making of the production. Paramount rejected James Whale as director. The picture was originally going to have narration and the studio also rejected the idea of having Orson Welles do it. According to Brackett the studio feared an attack by Hearst newspapers. - @Monday, May 30, 2016 7:35 PM

The main difference between The Haunting and this film is that you never actually see any ghosts in the Haunting. You hear them and sometimes they affect the environment around them but you never at any point even glimpse any spirit or ghost. - @Monday, August 3, 2015 5:31 PM

He's right that Milland never lived up to his performance in Lost Weekend. He went back to B-films and lesser stuff as he grew older.  I liked this film as a kid. Not over the top but did have some creepy moments with limited effects used to achieve them.  I wasn't familiar with the later career and fate of Gail Russell.  Pretty tragic, but not an unknown end for others in Hollywood. - @Tuesday, July 28, 2015 2:38 AM
